Please send us an example of what you are trying to do.
Also, don't forget to specify which Lilypond version
you are using when you send a question. Lilypond is still
evolving fairly quickly. Did you check which Lilypond
version the Mutopia examples were written for?

This is one of the major limitations in the stable 1.4.xx versions
of Lilypond that has been solved in 1.5.xx, which unfortunately
is not available for Windows unless you compile it yourself.
However, there's a trick to get a reasonable output, namely to add
a spacing note at the end of the grace notes and slur to that one:
\grace{c16 ( d ) s} e4
