The webcam causes the computer to hang immediately upon connection, at 
any time.

why do you try to insmog 'usbvideo'? i have a Creative Webcam 5 camera 
(connected via USB), and it use videodev.o and pwc.o (the phillips web 
cam).

which web cam do you have? perhaps you need a different driver?
