You may all refer to me as an ignoramus. I've been clicking the recompile button in the script editor and cleverly ignoring the recompile all scripts menu option. My guess is this: 1) .dir x has a link to external script y. 2) dumb user (me) deletes script y from cast, imports script y'

I wonder if this bugfix between D8 and D8.5 might shed some light: After deleting a linked script file, then reopening a movie that linked to the deleted script, then making a change to the internal copy of the script and then saving, the changes to the script are not saved.
