You may all refer to me as an ignoramus. I've been clicking the recompile
button in the script editor and cleverly ignoring the recompile all
scripts menu option.
My guess is this:
1) .dir x has a link to external script y.
2) dumb user (me) deletes script y from cast, imports script y'

apps. One app, however, needs a slightly altered version of said script.
2) So, in the troublesome app, I deleted the script from the cast list and
re-imported it as standard instead of

After deleting a linked script file, then reopening a movie that
linked to the deleted script, then making a change to the internal copy
of the script and then saving, the changes to the script are not saved.
I think this hits the nail on the head. Thanks to all who answered.
Unfortunately, it was not a case of a) the script needing to be recompiled,
or b) a duplicate of the script existing in another cast.
