...and buy some model of Prius! I get a long-term average of just under 5
litres/100Km from my Prius-C, and that includes a lot of 110 Km/hour travel
between The Highlands and Sydney where it's less efficient. Interestingly, the
trip to Sydney, which is significantly downhill, normally requires about
3.8-3.9 litres/100Km but that figure increases to 5.0-5.2 on the uphill journey
back.

It's surprising how one's attitude to petrol price changes with such an
economical vehicle.

Buy local, plan trips.

But it's still nice to see prices below $1/l

Haha .. yes true.

It certainly looks to become a useful website resource though. For example,
my sister lives in Marrickville, which shows an apparent 16c / litre difference
on the FuelCheck resource between the highest and lowest of fuel prices for
their 45 reasonably near-by outlets, and the two are only around 5 klm apart.

I'd say this site will become very popular across NSW, and, will result in lower
fuel prices across the State. An excellent State Gov initiative, and one which
I'd certainly hope Victoria etc soon emulates. Well done the NSW government.

Cheers,
Stephen

I’m 75, closer to 76. I do have car and I try to drive below the speed limit or
85kmph whichever is the lower. In explanation 85kmph is the minimum speed for
the top gear. This tends to annoy people on the expressway. Im not unreasonable
though as if traffic is heavy I will speed up to 90kmph but then I mostly don’t
drive when traffic is heavy. My fuel consumption is almost 20% below the rated
figure.

My local shops are only 500 metres away so it is an easy walk. For substantial
shopping i have a choice of a number or places all within 5km and for that I
used my recumbent tricycle with a 200 watt electric motor (I am a bit of a wimp
and need help on hills). I have a trailer which transforms into a shopping
trolly with a drop down wheel.

My parents didn’t need a car and I can see a time when I do not and as will do
my grandchildren I hope. But two of my grandchildren already have cars :-(

Back to petrol, I buy around 30 litres a month.

Hilarious example.

I suspect that the road between the two is broken by bridge-work.

Because Google Maps is currently showing a 50km each way drive north
via Campbelltown or 70km each way SE along the Wollongong escarpment.

If you're in one place and you use 10 litres to get to the other, at
1.30 = 13.00, then you need to buy 65 litres at 0.20 per litre
saving, in order to break even.

And of course prices in such circumstances tend to become volatile,
so you can't rely on either price being the same the critical 45
minutes later.

(There are of course counter-examples).

26 Aug 2016

Today fuel was almost 20 cents cheaper in Tahmoor than it was Appin.

That sort of information was once hidden but is now brought to light
through the NSW Government's Fuel Check website, which allows
motorists to check the petrol prices for service stations anywhere
in the state, ranked from cheapest to most expensive.

State Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello
said the site was the first of its kind in the country and was
likely to boost competition.

"We already have laws that dictate how service stations can display
petrol prices on their roadside signboard," Mr Dominello said.

"We are simply extending this obligation to say that when you change
your prices on the forecourt, you also need to report them online."

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury expected the site will make a huge difference.

"We think this will change the way people buy petrol forever," the
NRMA's Peter Khoury said.

"We think this is an outstanding outcome for motorists and
something the NRMA has been campaigning for now for a number of
years."

A key benefit for regions like Wollondilly is that the government
has mandated that all service stations in the state had to register
with Fuel Check - previously fuel pricing on this scale was only
available in state capitals.

"In the past service stations didn't have to compete because
motorists would normally just fill up there and be none the wiser
that, if you drive around the corner it could be 20 per cent
cheaper," Mr Khoury said.

"Now they can't do that - they can't hide."

The variation in prices within even a single suburb is sure to
surprise Wollondilly residents.

"It will finally shine a light into an industry that desperately
needed it," Mr Khoury said.

"I think the public will be surprised at just how big the gap is.

"This will allow you to find that diamond in the rough that was
hidden from the rest of us because you had to go driving around
trying to find cheaper petrol.

Fuel Check website helps drivers find cheap petrol
26 Aug 2016

Today fuel was almost 20 cents cheaper in Tahmoor than it was Appin.

That sort of information was once hidden but is now brought to light through
the NSW Government’s Fuel Check website, which allows motorists to check the
petrol prices for service stations anywhere in the state, ranked from cheapest
to most expensive.

State Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello said the
site was the first of its kind in the country and was likely to boost
competition.

“We already have laws that dictate how service stations can display petrol
prices on their roadside signboard,” Mr Dominello said.

“We are simply extending this obligation to say that when you change your
prices on the forecourt, you also need to report them online.”

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury expected the site will make a huge difference.

“We think this will change the way people buy petrol forever,” the NRMA’s Peter
Khoury said.

“We think this is an outstanding outcome for motorists and  something the NRMA
has been campaigning for now for a number of years.”

A key benefit for regions like Wollondilly is that the government has mandated
that all service stations in the state had to register with Fuel Check –
previously fuel pricing on this scale was only available in state capitals.

“In the past service stations didn’t have to compete because motorists would

corner it could be 20 per cent cheaper,” Mr Khoury said.

“Now they can’t do that - they can’t hide.”

The variation in prices within even a single suburb is sure to surprise

“It will finally shine a light into an industry that desperately needed it,” Mr
Khoury said.

“I think the public will be surprised at just how big the gap is.
