Then there's this, from Facebook:

It's interesting, in light of the Productivity Commission looking to remove the USO

today that people in hardest hit area of the cyclone are scrambling to use the
payphones as no other communication is working.

Duh.
I meant kU band. I don't know what is happening to my head! I think I have this
right now. We went from C to Ku. This was in the US when we were doing a lot
more with narrowcasting via satellite for distance ed purposes. Here's the Ku
article, and you'll see the proliferation of Ku satellites.

I was going to mention weather impacts. Back in the day of Ka band, which
replaced C (the bigger dishes we used to grab signal from early satellites),
rain was an issue. Lots of noise. I didn't know if it continued with Ku or not.

The other common NBN option in the regions is fixed wireless. They
started off with the 2.3 GHz band. That doesn't play well with
vegetation (or rain, apparently). I've seen images of devastation as
farmers try to clear a line to get signal. Now, they've moved on to 3.4
GHz, which works worse. Of course, our government is still selling off
700 MHz spectrum to the highest bidder. Never let vital infrastructure
get in the way of a quick dollar.

Meanwhile, in the town of Cessnock and surrounds, I notice workers
running out black cable. I presume that's copper.

[LINK] Internet of Malware comes to Miele dishwashers

Something to smile about, or possibly cry about:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/03/26/miele_joins_internetofst_hall_of_shame/

A Miele commercial dishwasher can apparently be hacked very simply using the
old directory-traversal trick.

This appliance includes an embedded web server so it can be controlled from a
browser, and that brings to mind the thought that many IOT devices must do so.
So how are they secured? Is China even now working out how they can disrupt
life as we know it by disabling pub dishwashers?
