I believe I have resolved this problem.
I was connecting to my ISP using authentication, but without starttls.
Trouble is, the version of nullmailer in ubuntu 12.04 did not support
starttls.
But with some help I found a backport of nullmailer for 12.04, installed
it and starttls now works
