Linux for our
operating systems class. Students are required to make Linux kernel
modifications as part of a project for this class. Until now we have
been using VMWare for this.

This sounds like CMS is returning control to CP for some reason. We
sometimes have that problem. execute:

or you can use B for short. begin resumes an interrupted task.
Or if that does not work,
IPL CMS
should do the trick.
