Thanks, Neale! The gzip and zlib improvements are particularly impressive.

As a quick example of the effect of hardware compression I created a 728M file
filled with random data from /dev/urandom:
Without hardware assist:
# time gzip -c -1 /tmp/gzip.in >/tmp/gzip.out.gz
real 0m35.471s
user 0m25.735s
sys 0m0.846s
With hardware assist:
time ./gzip -c -1 /tmp/gzip.
Among the recent additions to EPEL this week include these:
cmake3-3.17.2-1.el7
gzip-1.10-3.68.el7
multiwatch-1.0.0-3.el7
ninja-build-1.7.2-4.el7
node-12.17.0-1.el7
zlib-1.2.11-21.el7
Note, gzip and zlib have support for the z15 compression hardware assist
operations.

The following packages have been added to the ClefOS 7 EPEL. The one of most
interest is bazel3 which is used to build packages such as tensorflow.
airinv-1.00.2-1.el7 C++ Simulated Airline Inventory Management System library
airrac-1.00.3-2.el7 C++ Simulated Revenue Accounting (RAC) System
Some highlights of recent updates to the ClefOS EPEL:
* openJDK 13
* nodejs 10.17/10.18/10.19/12.13/12.14/12.15
* koji 1.20

++good! A great addition to the ecosystem.
We built EPEL-7 for s390x so while you wait for the official release it's
available here:

I am not sure what the rules for announcements are so I am going to
keep this brief and point to the full blog post here ->
https://smoogespace.blogspot.com/2019/08/announcing-epel-80-official-release.html
The reason for saying it on this list is that we added s390x to this
EPEL release

actually the base OS has a full suite of spelling tools

Kudos to Leland for using his copious free time (!) to get this going as

Hi,
I'm in the process of rebuilding packages now. EPEL packages for z have
never existed, but if all goes well they could be released soon.
fyi, this requires a dedicated z guest for compiles/builds (which I
already have), and integration into the current EPEL infrastructure

Thanks for the replies I got for the EPEL-thread (
http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-390@vm.marist.edu/msg53425.html) I posted.
In January I posted some questions on the Red Hat mailing list, asking about
EPEL (amongst other things). This is the post:
http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists
Hi,
Currently there are no s390x packages in EPEL. A while back I had a
conversation with the folks who can make this happen, and it looks like
it's possible. I'll forward this message internally and get that
conversation going again.

Subject: EPEL-like repos for z/Linux
Hello list.
This is my first post to the list. We're about to set up some RHEL 5
servers in z/VM on z10, and would like to incoorporate the z/Linux servers
into our existing infrastructure as much as possible. For example, I
27;re currently using on our x86
platform.
For our x86 platform we use the Nagios and Munin RPMs found in EPEL. Is
there any EPEL-like repos for z/Linux that perhaps contains these tools?
Regards,
Kenneth Holter
