I trashed my Windows accidentally. I did mkfs.ext2 on the wrong
partition.I have decided to continue with just linux.
I am facing the following problems.
1. MP3s play great but the sound gets distorted momentarily when a song
begins or when I skip to the middle of a song. I got xmms from

I believe the problem might be that your harddisk is not able to servee
the data as fast as you are requesting. That is usually true when you
do a random jump - the OS has to go through a lot of data to figure out
where the actuall position is.
As for 6.0 vs 6.1 issue wasn't there a posting
What's your graphics card and what is the monitor you configured ?? You

Your old configurations will be preserved, except for /etc/lilo.conf.
Keep a backup of that handy.
I'd recommend getting the most recent updates from redhat.com and
installing them instead of older versions of the same software from a
CD.
