this is done with the extra subroutine method, making it easier to add
in other styles of naming convention later on (regexes will still need
adjusting as well)..
the first hunk defines the PartName function, and the last hunk does

The new tar is conflicting with cpio?! That doesn't sound right.
Perhaps you can try to ask the maintainer of tar what his/her motivation
for making that change was. If there is no real good reason. BUT

I cannot build the fai nfsroot with today woody packages.
When I run make-fai-nfsroot -v it says:
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/cpio_2.4.2-38_i386.deb
W: Failure trying to run: chroot /var/fai/nfsroot dpkg
Here is the problem:
