Sendmail claims user doesn't exist

How does sendmail check if a user exists or not? I have a buch of email accounts that worked fine till now, and suddenly sendmail claims that they don't exist - you can't send email to them. I can su into them, though, and they exist in /etc/passwd. Why doesn't sendmail know they exist? --
