I'd ask for a "war story" that the candidate is proud of. How s/he
approached the problem, how methodical (or not), how false leads were
eliminated, what lessons were learned.

it.

You can also describe the symptoms of a problem you've actually had at your
site, and see how the candidate tracks it down.
