On Monday, May 7th at 18:30, Haifux will gather to hear a talk by Uri Barkan

  Scientific Python

Abstract

(For a longer description in Hebrew, see http://haifux.org/lectures/277/ )

In scientific programming, software is used for the purpose of research of processes. This method is used today in almost every field of science: Mathematics, physics, biology, medicine, engineering and even in social science. This includes e.g. numerical analysis, analysis of data and numerical optimization.

One of the most popular programs in this field is MATLAB, which is distributed with a proprietary license by the Mathworks. The academic establishment endorses knowledge sharing, and is therefore keen to adopt free software, which is ideologically closer to the its underlying values of freedom of knowledge. The appearance of free alternatives to MATLAB in the recent years is therefore no surprise. One of these alternatives is based upon the Python programming language.

This lecture will present how Python can be used in scientific and engineering applications while comparing the environment and syntax of MATLAB.
