This sounds toe me like a driver bug . The sky2 drivers had many
problems and many patches, by Stephen Hemminger and others.
I would suggest to check if this problem occurs with 2.6.20 or higher
kernel (on this machine, or, if not possible, and just to verify that
this indeed is the problem , on another machine with both 2.6.20 (or
higher) and the kernel version you have, and that nic on it.
