Re: [RFC,1/3] cpia2: move to staging in preparation for removal

2018-09-28 Thread Andrea Merello
I do often use this driver, and I'm interested in working on it for preventing
it from being removed.

I can perform functional test with my HW (usb microscope) on a kernel from
current media tree (anyway currently it works on my box with a pretty recent
kernel).

How much effort is expected to be required to port it to vb2? I'm currently
hacking on another (recent) v4l2 subdev driver, but my wknowledge of the
v4l2/media framework is far from good.. If someone give me some directions then
I can try to do that..

[PATCH] [media] v4l: xilinx: fix typo in formats table

2018-09-28 Thread Andrea Merello
In formats table the entry for CFA pattern "rggb" has GRBG fourcc.
This patch fixes it.

advice on Easycap dongles and VBI interface..

2013-12-05 Thread Andrea Venturi
i'm working on a project for legacy support of a teletext server with
composite output interface.

i supposed to ingest teletext using the /dev/vbi support on linux so
i've got an Easycap dongle

Bus 001 Device 008: ID 05e1:0408 Syntek Semiconductor Co., Ltd STK1160
Video Capture Device

AFAIK (i didn't open) it's using a video decoder SC7113 supposed to be a
clone of SAA7113.

this device is supposed to work on an Ubuntu 12.04 with old kernel 3.2
so i had to blacklist the stock RE kernel module easycap and install
the retrofit from here:

  https://github.com/ezequielgarcia/stk1160-standalone

i see the saa7115 is loaded and i can also see audio and video through
mplayer..

 $ lsmod
 Module  Size  Used by
 saa711518447  1
 stk116027732  0
 videobuf2_core 28148  1 stk1160
 snd_ac97_codec110213  1 stk1160

 but in the dev fs there's no sign of /dev/vbi interface..

so my questions are:

- are these SAA7113 clones really copycat with all the features supported?

- has the SAA711x driver ever been used for /dev/vbi feature? i used to
work with Bt878 cards for that feature.

- is the stock 3.x mainline kernel of the stk1160 really
improved/different/VBI enabled?

- is there a way to extract VBI lines on /dev/video0?

- is there an easy way to enable or at least test (directly on the USB
interface) the VBI interface?

- finally which approach do you suggest for supporting this ancient
feature, if feasibiliy tests are ok:

  - a libusb quick hack?
  - an implementation of the bindings between user level /dev/vbi and
underlying SAA711x routines?

bests

Creatix CTX946, HW MPEG2 encoder not supported?

2013-10-18 Thread Andrea Venturi

hi,

i've got a quite old DVB card, Creatix CTX946; i was looking to use it
as a CBR MPEG2 HW encoder.

http://www.creatix.com/produkte/multimedia/ctx946.htm

it's a design based on the couple SAA7134 + SAA6752HS (MPEG2 HW encoder)

it's PCI ID: 0x16be:0x5000 so it's recognized as MEDION MD7134, without
support for saa6752hs module. in saa7134-cards.c it's described:

.vendor   = PCI_VENDOR_ID_PHILIPS,
.device   = PCI_DEVICE_ID_PHILIPS_SAA7134,
.subvendor= 0x16be, /* CTX946 analog TV, HW mpeg,
DVB-T */
.subdevice= 0x5000, /* only analog TV and DVB-T for
now */

.driver_data  = SAA7134_BOARD_MD7134,

i see there are a number of cards with the SAA6752 support (named
SAA7134_MPEG_EMPRESS in card description) so i'm wondering if making
this card support the MPEG2 encoder is easy enough.

using the saa7134 module i2c_scan=1 param it sees the i2c address (0x20)
of the saa6752.

as source code base for tampering with linux media tree, i've got the
git clone of few days ago from: http://git.linuxtv.org/media_build.git

to make a sample test i put in the relevant place of MD7134 description
SAA7134_MPEG_EMPRESS in place of SAA7134_MPEG_DVB:

   [SAA7134_BOARD_MD7134] = {
   .name   = Medion 7134,
   .audio_clock= 0x00187de7,
   .tuner_type = TUNER_PHILIPS_FMD1216ME_MK3,
   .radio_type = UNSET,
   .tuner_addr = ADDR_UNSET,
   .radio_addr = ADDR_UNSET,
   .tda9887_conf   = TDA9887_PRESENT,
   .mpeg   = SAA7134_MPEG_EMPRESS,

..and now i see some sign of loading in dmesg:

...
[8.816337] tda9887 1-0043: creating new instance
[8.816340] tda9887 1-0043: tda988[5/6/7] found

[9.284186] saa7134[0]: registered device radio0
[9.304207] saa7134[0]: registered device video1 [mpeg]
...

anyway cat /dev/video1 /dev/null returns an I/O error, BTW i've
lost also the DVB-T adapter from this setup.

last trial (before getting here with my first test) was loading again
kernel module SAA7134 with some debug messages: modprobe saa7134
ts_debug=255 i2c_scan=1 i2c_debug=1

PS i didn't check if the value in params are meaningful! :-)

it's not clear to me what's gone awry for not detecting DVB adapter..

in attach the result from kernel loading and the stuff got when trying
cat /dev/video1 xx with I/O error (maybe i've got the wrong debug
flag in modprobe, here.. not many useful messages..)

now, i suppose the Creatix CTX946 design is pretty similar to the
NXP/Philips reference design (and to a gazillion of different clone
cards..) as described here
http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/SAA7134HL.pdf

i checked on the saa7134-cards.c and there are a number of Empress cards:

* SAA7134_BOARD_EMPRESS (ref design philips but tuner is different?)
* SAA7134_BOARD_TVSTATION_DVR (looks good, next test..)
* SAA7134_BOARD_BMK_MPEX_NOTUNER (no tuner.. )
* SAA7134_BOARD_BMK_MPEX_TUNER (maybe worth a try )
* SAA7134_BOARD_RTD_VFG7350 (no tuner..)
* SAA7134_BOARD_BEHOLD_M6 (a number of video port settings..)

anyone with a spare educated guess about where to head on?

Understanding v4l2-ctl flags

2012-12-10 Thread andrea
Hi,

I have a Logitech webcam under PWC.
I've managed to use v4l2-ctl to change come controls, but some of them seem to
be unsupported.

v4l2-ctl reports the following flags

inactive
update
slider
write-only
** no flags at all **

e.g.

restore_factory_settings (button) : flags=update, write-only

What is the meaning of them?
I can guess that inactive means unsupported, but do I care about the others?

EM28xx based device support

2011-06-27 Thread Andrea De Marsi

Dear all,

I recently tried to have a wireless microscope working with the em28xx
driver; the device is the following:

http://www.cosview.com/cp/html/?3.html

it is listed in the usb bus with vendor id 14c3 and product id 2301.
Looking the .inf of the MS windows driver I noticed that it seems to be
based on a Empia em2860 chipset, therefore I modified the em28xx driver
of the 2.6.24 linux kernel (specifically 2.6.24-28-generic linux kernel
in a Ubuntu Hardy distribution) so that this particular vendor id and
product id are associated to that driver (pls find patch below).

In fact this trick has worked, at least as far as the images are
concerned (there is also a button to take picture which I will be
working on later), and I've been able to see the images with the
following parameters of mplayer:

mplayer -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0:norm=NTSC -vo x11 tv://

I now need to upgrade the linux kernel to a newer version (2.6.32 or
newer); I followed the same path that was working with 2.6.24 (which is
basically have the device recognized as an empia device) and in fact
some images are visible but they are not stable; it seems as the new
driver version was not capble of managing the NTSC format (in fact I
noticed there is no more .norm field in the initialization structure).

Do you have any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Andrea

Re: Kernel hangs after suspend to ram

2010-09-01 Thread Andrea Amorosi
Hi to all!
I'm trying to use my Dikom DK-300 usb dvb-t device connected to an old
laptop used as media player.
The device works well but if I suspend the pc to ram (S3) when the
Dikom usb stick is plugged in, the system hangs during the resume
phase.
So I've tried to create two scripts. The first one removes the driver
before sleeping (the script is in the /etc/acpi/suspend.d directory)
and the second one reloads it during the resume phase (this script is
in /etc/acpi/resume.d directory).
I've also inserted in the scripts some logs and it seems that the
driver is correctly removed before the suspension, but then the pc
hangs when resuming.
Do you have some suggestion on how to resolve?
Thank you,

Error using PWC on a PS3

2009-12-26 Thread Andrea
Hi,

I've tried to attach my Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Pro 4000 to a PS3 running
Fedora 12.

I get this error in dmesg

pwc: Failed to set video mode q...@10 fps; return code = -110

Everything works well on a standard x86 laptop running Fedora 11.

Anybody has an idea why a different architecture could affect pwc?
I don't know, problems with little/big endian?

[PATCH] PWC: parameter trace is only available in debug

2009-12-09 Thread Andrea
This patch fixes a small issue where modinfo says the parameter trace is
always available, while
it only works if CONFIG_USB_PWC_DEBUG is enabled.

How to set nomail option for the mailing list

2009-10-15 Thread Andrea

Hi,

I read and sometimes post to this mailing list, but I very much prefer to use a newsreader from
gmane rather than receiving all the mails.

In the old linux-dvb mailing list it was possible to switch off receiving all
the emails,
is it still possible?

I could not find anything in the documentation of majord...@vger.kernel.org

Any help?

The linux-media@vger.kernel.org list is not subscriber-only like the old list.
You could just unsubscribe.

Thanks.
But gmane returns a wrong information then

You have sent a message to be posted on the
gmane.linux.drivers.video-input-infrastructure newsgroup.

This is a non-public mailing list, which means that you have to
subscribe to the list to post to it. If you're already subscribed to
the list, Gmane can forward the message you sent to the list if you respond
to this message. If not, you should sign up to the mailing list first,
and then respond to this message, or just forget about it.

Many mailing lists have an option to subscribe to a list, but then put
it in 'nomail' mode, which means that you won't receive any mail from
the list.

The mailing list software used for the list in question is majordomo.

Mail majord...@vger.kernel.org and say 'subscribe linux-media'.
You have to respond within one week.

I was hoping to be able to receive it like for the last HD trial.

Has anybody tried Freeview HD in UK

2009-10-14 Thread Andrea

Hi,

I've read that they are going to start trial for HD DVB on Freeview

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/bbcinternet/2009/06/whats_happening_with_freeview.html
http://www.dtg.org.uk/dtg/press_release.php?id=14

They mention September, October and Decembre 2009, does anybody know more
detailed info?
Is it using the same transmission, just a different codec, or do we need new
receivers?

Choppy audio/video with KWorld DVB-S 100...

2009-06-22 Thread Andrea Giuliano
Hi,

I've been watching and recording free channels for almost a couple of
year with this card, using MythTV, but suddenly some weeks ago I
couldn't any more.

I thought it was a problem with the signal in my region, but it could
not be the case, since I still can watch TV perfectly fine with the same
dish and a set top box.

Also, at present MythTV says signal 98%, s/n 4.8db, which sounds
strange.

Last but not least, femon -H gives the following output:

FE: Conexant CX24123/CX24109 (DVBS)
Problem retrieving frontend information: Operation not supported
status S | signal  44% | snr  64% | ber 35 | unc 0 |
Problem retrieving frontend information: Operation not supported
status S | signal  44% | snr  60% | ber 35 | unc 0 |
Problem retrieving frontend information: Operation not supported
status S | signal  44% | snr  63% | ber 35 | unc 0 |
Problem retrieving frontend information: Operation not supported
status S | signal  44% | snr  63% | ber 35 | unc 0 |
Problem retrieving frontend information: Operation not supported
status S | signal  44% | snr  62% | ber 35 | unc 0 |

The lines about a problem are new to me: I ran femon many many times in
the past without those lines. Please also note the completely different
value for the strength (44% vs 98% that MythTV says).

I'm afraid my card could be damaged, or something is going wrong with
driver, config or what else.

One more thing: the problems above appear with kernel 2.6.25-1, 2.6.26-1
and 2.6.2.6-2, but not with 2.6.18-1. With the latter I can record
perfectly, and femon shows a much better S/N ratio! But I've been
running 2.6.26-2 since many months ago, how could it be a kernel
problem?

What's going on?

Any hint would be much appreciated.

Re: Em28xx Log as requested

2009-06-13 Thread Andrea Merello
I got it work only one time, and I cannot reproduce it anymore. I
loaded forcing card=7

When worked it could find the philips video decoder IC. Other times,
when it does not work, it does not claim to find that IC (see previous
mail with log)

Maybe you are interested in the log..
It worked by setting input 1 (the second starting by 0) as video composite.
I suppose input 0 is the svideo

Re: RFCv1: v4l-dvb development models old kernel support

This would basically mean making a snapshot of the v4l-dvb repository,
calling it v4l-dvb-old and relying on people to update it with fixes. I did
think about this myself but I thought it unlikely that the old tree would
see much work, if at all. It's what they are admitting to on the wireless
site as well. This could be an option if we are faced with an incompatible
kernel change, but in this particular case it is my gut-feeling that 2.6.22
is old enough that people can just upgrade to that release.

hi,
i know of some platforms where the linux kernel is stuck on a way older
release as the HW producer is a bit picky (to say the least..).

i think about the embedded multimedia SOCs where linux is already
winning hands down with regard to coverage and support BUT the industry
still doesn't get really the idea behind the free software environment
[*] and still gives away lots of binary blobs for the proprietary HW
(so end users can tweak something but not really move over to modern
kernels..).

here there are three examples i know of quite a bit:

- ST Microelectronics STi710x, DVB SOC, SH4 CPU based stuck on kernel
2.6.17..

- Sigma Design SMP8634, MIPS based stuck on 2.6.15

- IBM Stb25xx DVB SOC PowerPc based stuck on 2.6.17

i'm sure there are really more like these and as they are targeting the
multimedia environment (media center?), the large part of end users
would like to add some gadget running on v4l-dvb drivers..

this is in my point of view at least a good reason to keep a snapshot of
the latest v4l-dvb tree who has a bit of support for older kernel
versions; the so called v4l-dvb-old idea already written about.

of course, the newer development should focus only on newer kernel to
keep as low as possible the compatibility burden.

just my 2 cents. bye

[*] it's of course the slow and painful path to consciousness of the
limits of closed development model when the open source and free (as
freedom) scenario starts to reveal all the win-win convenience for all
the parties involved, but it's same ol story and we are all well
involved here in this kind of mindset, so don't want to repeat..

How much are you looking for -- in other words, do you need
the full service including video that a RedButton service
might bring up, or do you just need a sample of, well,
Digital Teletext?

i'd like to have a couple of minute of a full TS from Freeview, to give
a quick glance to Red button service.

supposed it's a 24Mbps, a couple of minutes should be something like
350MB of dump.

I'm assuming that you're in Italia (based on your mail
headers). Therefore you likely would have problems in
receiving television programming via satellite on Astra
2D, although I've had error-free reception with a 60cm
dish in Zuerich long before I was aware of the spotbeam.

i know that i could try freesat albeit has a tight footprint, but i just
have a fixed dish toward 13 east

However, the BBC radio services are on a pan-european beam
and also (since some months) include a minimal MHEG
application that I've been able to receive and view, like
the BBCi services on the TV channels -- also available
from the BBC (if not ITV too) via satellite/Freesat, and
which is likely to be pretty much identical with that
received via Freeview...

is there really MHEG over the BBC radio service?

do you mean on these BBC World service at 13 degree?
