Ilan,

check the host-to-isp resolving on computer B and compare it with
machine A.

If computer B is a linux machine then check the etc/resolv.conf on
computer B
If computer B is a windows machine, check your Ethernet/ip dns tab

The whole kit including the hub was only about $70 on sale at CompUSA. I
knew about the null cables, but for the price it was a pretty good deal, and
expandable. I have dreams of a little server w/cable modem with my 2
current PCs hanging off of that. 2 10/100 cards, the 10mbps hub and 2
pretty long cables (15 ft I think).

Now if I could just get cable modem... I live in about the biggest town in
Metrowest Boston and its a bandwidth wasteland. :)

In addition, the mini-HOWTO is no longer current.

If you wish to help out, I suggest you drop by the IP Masq resource page at
http://ipmasq.cjb.net/ and contact Ambrose Au with an offer to translate
the current HOWTO.

Subject: Why doesn't dhcpd update leases file when hardware ethernet used?
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 07:21:12 GMT

Does anyone have any idea how to get dhcpd to maintain (update) its
leases file when the "hardware ethernet" clause is used in a host
declaration?

My basic dhcp setup desired is to have the 5 or 6 known hosts on our
network be assigned fixed addresses, so that firewall rules can be
easily developed to limit access. There is a range of dynamic addresses
available as well for temporary use.

When I have the following host declaration in /etc/dhcpd.conf:

        host abcd {
                fixed-address 192.168.0.X;
        }

then host "abcd" never gets handed the address 192.168.0.X, but gets one
from the dynamic address range instead. However, at least the leases
file maintained by dhcpd contains the information about the lease
including the IP address that is assigned to host "abcd". It would
appear that the host declaration above is not matched when dhcpd
searches for it.

When I add the hardware ethernet clause:

        host abcd {
                hardware ethernet XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX;
                fixed-address 192.168.0.X;
        }

then host "abcd" is definitely given the IP address 192.168.0.X because
the ethernet address matches. BUT -- the problem -- the leases file
contains *no data* about this lease! The IP address does not even
appear at all in the leases file!

I have tried many combinations of other options in dhcpd.conf but
nothing else seems to have the desired effect.

It is imperative to have the leases file updated so that DNS can be
dynamically updated.

Any hints?

I am running RH5.1 with dhcpd compiled from the sources for
dhcp-2.0b1pl27. A previous version of dhcp from standard RPM
distributions acted the same way.

Thanks for any help,

                -Mike

Subject: ppp and routing
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 19:04:26 +1000

Hi,

I have a problem with connecting a Linux box to my ISP. The ip is dynamic
and ppp connects with no apparant problems. However I can only ping the host
I'm connected to (my dynamic ip). I've checked for problems with the default
route but none exist (I think).

The response to a route -n is
host gw netmask
118.240.138.190 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255
192.168.22.0
127.0.0.1
0.0.0.0 118.240.138.190 0.0.0.0

I cannot ping any other remote computers except 118.240.138.190

Does anyone know whats going on. If you need more information I would be
happy to supply it.

Thanks

In addition to password protecting that and in fact any boot
parameters in /etc/lilo.conf I would recommend installing sulogin. It
is a shame that there are popular Linux distribution which don't
use sulogin or even shadow passwords by default. /etc/inittab is
configured to run sulogin instead of /bin/sh in single user mode and
sulogin prompts for the root password before giving you a shell.

Of course you also need to prevent floppy boots, changing the BIOS
setup and opening the case. And you really should stop crossposting
to too many newsgroups.

I don't know if CODA would be better than NFS from a security point of
view (if the client machines can't be trusted). Anybody with any
experience with CODA?

Those are really old cards! I doubt very much that they will run in
Linux (you have to use real-mode drivers to get them to run in Win95!).

Somewhere around here I have the Windows (3.1) drivers for those cards.
If you really want them (I still think you're wasting your time), e-mail

Subject: PPP - Could not determine remote IP address
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 10:40:39 +0100 (BST)

OK, so I'm trying to connect to the public access freeserve number.
As you can see from the following log, everything seems to work until
about halfway down, when a few steps after

  Jun 10 22:39:54 priam pppd[286]: sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x2 <addr 0.0.0.0>]

I get

Jun 10 22:39:54 priam pppd[286]: Could not determine remote IP address

which seems strange since the immediately preceeding lines seem to be all about
getting an IP address (in this case 212.1.146.40). I've got the noipdefault
in my options file. Why isn't pppd accepting the IP number?

I've looked around in dejanews etc, but haven't seen any answers to this kind
of question.

thanks,
#Paul

Subject: eth0 and ppp0 - fetchmail behaves strangely !?
Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 17:18:15 +0800

Hello,
I am having some problems with my RHL6.0 with 3Com ethernet and an external
56Kbps modem. I can connect to my isp pop server through both eth0 and ppp0.
I have sendmail running fine on this machine. Now I am trying to run
fetchmail. Fetchmail works just great with my Lan connection, but not with
my ppp connection.
On the first attempt, fetchmail returns a "no route to the server" error and
exits. But an immediate second attempt to run fetchmail succeeds without
much problems.
As I understand, after I connect to another isp by ppp, my default route
should be through the ppp. The netscape browser can work on all situations,
whether there is a Lan connection or ppp connection or both to the internet.

What might be wrong? My fetchmail ver. is 5.0.0

Thanks in advance for any expert suggestions.

Joshy.

I am looking for something functionally similar to Network Neighbourhood
that runs on a linux system and is able to browse a Novell server and

Does such a thing exist? I have Samba working the other way around, and
expect that it may be possible with smbclient to do what I want, but in

There is some conflic between the HOWTO, and the cesdis page,
as you noted. Looking at
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt, there is an example [1]
there that follows the cesdis style (that is, the word after
"options" is the original name, not the alias name).

[1] That example has nothing to do with multiple ethernet cards,
I'm just talking about using the "eth0" or the "ne".

You may want to email the maintainer of the HOWTO, and apprise him
of the conflict between the HOWTO and 2 other sources, and
describe what did not work for you.

Subject: PPP working as root, but....

Following Bill Unruh's very help instructions, I have PPP working as
root. I would now like to extend this to other users. I have read the
sections in PPP HOWTO and am aware of some of the issues involved. I
have tried a couple of different scripts with various permissions but
have not successfully started a connection as other than root. These are
the two script files I am currently using. They work as root, but if I
execute ppp-on as another user, ppp-on reports, but nothing happens. The
permissions of both files are -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root. Any ideas?

Use Linuxconf, under the networking -> server tasks, there should be a Samba
option there. Go to defaults and enable password encryption.

Subject: ping shows duplicate but only one interface
Date: Sat, 12 Jun 1999 06:48:25 -0400

I have a RH5.1 installation used to run SAMBA for authentication of PC's

in our AIX server environment. All has been running well for months. I
happened to
ping the IP of the LINUX box from AIX and recieved a message showing the
IP was a duplicate and
the 2 response times. If I pull the cable on the LINUX box and ping the
IP it does not exist.
The LINUX environment has not changed in months, AIX is at 4.31. I am
running DNS and NIS.

I'd appreciate suggestions.

Harry

Greetings,

I was reading a file on setting up ppp. At one point they said to
create a specific file and save as ~/.ppprc. Where the hell is ~/ ?
What does the tilde mean?
