Hi there! I've got an NT network, to which I've just added a SAMBA
server. It's a CD-ROM tower with 28 CD's, that I've asked a couple of
other questions about. That shouldn't really make any difference for
this question, though. The version of the samba RPM on this server is
samba-2.0.3-8. I've noticed that when I go to the Server Manager and
bring up the properties for this server, it gives me some statistics,
but they seem a little bogus. I've always got 1 session open, with no
files open or locked, and zero named pipes. This is always the case,
even when I go and open a file on one of those shares for editing,
server manager still only reports the one dummy_user session. Should
this work at all, and if it should, then can anybody help me fix it?
I'll upgrade to 2.04b if that will help as soon as I find some RPMS for
it. Thanks,
        Greg

Subject: Questions on NAT (Same address on both sides)

Can you use NAT to turn your Linux box into a router?
If I put aliases to every address on my internal network on eth0, can I
push that out eth1 (where the real network is)?

I currently am running unprotected and want to force a firewall
in between my local network and our internet router. But I need to do
this without effected our address setup. We have webservers, DNS, chat
... with real IP's pointing at our Internet router, and the outside
world pointing to us.

If I can't do this, what is my best fix? I can't get in the internet
router, we have a full "C" address space. Router is ?.?.?.1 and all
local servers point to it.
I could change the default gateway off local devices and point them the
the internal (eth1) of my Linux box, but how do I get requests from eth0
-> eth1?

TIA

I finally looked at the source for /bin/login, and there is a
hard-coded 60 second timeout. I am now convinced there is absolutely
no way to defeat this behaviour without hacking /bin/login.

Rob and Bjorn,

Thanks for the comments. While I'm not a newbie, there are things which are
learned over time and then may have been forgotten and need reinforcement.
Even as old as I am, my mother sometimes has to remind me of my manners
(hey, I even slip occassionally). But this is one areas which I was not
aware of, but now am fully informed.

Having lived in Germany for 3 years, I'd forgetten about the by minute
charge. Thanks, Rod, for reminding me.

The reason I posted the afpfs binary is because I was afraid that the
software would be lost (there have been a few postings which could not find
it anywhere). This is the ONLY site I have found it and I'm in the process
of trying to put it on my web site to keep it alive for others to contribute
to. So there was a good reason for doing it, just not economical for others
in other countries. I apologize for this inconvinence, but I was concerned
that work having been done would be lost for good and I for one don't like
to rework anything.

Bjorn, we both learned something today and we're both better for it.

Ok, here is the situation I am in. I have two nic cards in my server.
One has the ip addy of 172.20.0.10 (eth0) the other is 172.20.0.11
(eth1). I would like to set up all incoming file/web server info to go
to the 172.20.0.10 card, while all the Quake stuff uses the
172.20.0.11. I know that I can do this by setting my machine as the DNS
for the network (I am using DHCP, so not hard to do) setting soga to
172.20.0.10 so when ppl on the network type in http://soga it will bring
up apache via eth0 (172.20.0.10). No big deal, I can handle that. Now
how in the world do I specify for quake to be using eth1? That is where
I get lost. I will be running a p166 (mxx) with 64 megs of ram. It has
two pci Netgear 310 (10/100) cards. Will I cut down on latency by using
two nic's or is my pci bus just not fast enough. I will be running
between 2-4 quake servers. There will be between 12-40 ppl on the
network at any givin time playing quake or downloading files off my
server. The three servers will have a 10/100 cisco switch, while the
rest of the hubs will plus into the switch. Will this setup prevent file
traffic from slowing down my quake traffic? If so, how do I do it
(forcing quake to use eth1). If not, is there another way to do
something similar?

Many thanks to anyone who can answer any of my questions.

P.S. Two more notes:
1) I am running Redhat 6.0
2) There is a LAN party this saturday 19th/sunday 20th (sleeping over)
it will be in the Millville, Ohio area, Quake and Half-life will be the
main games (some starcraft) or anything else you can find someone else
to play. If you are interested please contact Me, Josh Owens at

Nevermind about the question above. I've found enough info on ipmasq to see
what I need to do. However, most of the info I've seen has the computers on
an LAN. And especially any of the solutions for windows machines being the

I just want to be able to do this through the direct connection. Possible?
How, please. ;o) Thanks again

hi there,

I'm trying to setup my linux machine (running RedHat 5.0) as a PPP
Server so that I can dial in from a Windows machine else where and then
map a network drive using Samba. I have had some measure of success
with the PPP server side..i.e I can get windows to connect and ping the
machine, but am unsure about the windows file sharing side of things.

  My questions are,

        1) Is this possible,
        2) If so, how do I go about it.

Many thanks in advance

I was successful by adding the setserial ttySx irq x line in my rc.local file.

Question? Did recompile your kernel for support your NIC. Also, what
kind of nic. I have had problems with 2.0.36 and etherexpress16 and
recompiling the kernel helped. How about putting your some more info like
the cards you are using, did you recompile the kernel, cable modem or DSL?

I'm not sure on the "NO CARRIER" message, but you can go to the sbin
directory "cd /sbin" from the command line and then type "./ifconfig -
a" to see what your connections are. The first should be loopback and
then the ppp connection should be there if you are connected.

You may want to try "usenet" to get the ppp connection - good luck!

me that the printer/terminal server combination doesn't talk
"BSD lpd protocol". (That is, there is more to it then just getting the
IP address and port right; you have to be speaking the same protocol.)
That rules out rlpr, and also rules out lpr with the rm=/rp= options.
You might still be able to use lpr, if you make a printcap entry
with an "if=" (or maybe of=?) filter entry that runs a program or
script which talks to the printer. If I'm on the right track, you
might want to start by using a network monitor to check what goes
between VMS and the printer - is it really telnet?

Subject: Could you use a few extra dollars?
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 14:50:56 GMT

Not so long ago I was living my life from paycheck to paycheck desperately
trying to save money for my future. Just when I thought I was at the end of my
rope I came across this article-I simply followed the instructions and the
results have been fantastic!!!

Are you constantly running across articles like this on message
boards, newsgroups, etc? If so the reason you are is because THIS WORKS! People
would not be wasting there time posting if it didn't.

THIS REALLY CAN MAKE YOU EASY MONEY!! IT WORKS!!! A little while back, I was
browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article
similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks
with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought," Yeah, right, this
must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading.
Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated
in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the
list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are
thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over and talking to a
few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured what have I got to lose
except 6 stamps and $6.00, right? Like most of us I was a little skeptical and
a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with
the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) and they confirmed that it is indeed
legal! Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!!... within 7 days, I
started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon,
but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By
the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third
week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week
and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in
rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that
on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it
works....also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get
the information off of it as you need it.

STEP 1:
Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper
"PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE
inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will not be seen through the
envelope to prevent thievery. Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes
and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of
paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill. What
you are doing is creating a service by this. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! Mail
the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:

#1) Jon Thomason
11 Snowhill Meadows
Foley, MO 36617

#2) Sam Kimmel
625 Elm Dr. 340 Cole
Madison, WI 53706

#3) Jody Lehnherr
N6843 Pratt Rd.
Monticello, WI 53570

#4) Michelle Price
Midtown
P.O. Box 24002
Saskatoon, SK
Canada
S7K 8B4

#5) Tracy Nadler
29915 Meridian Pl. #16205
Farmington Hills, MI 48331

#6) Jon Huff
 10668 Adam Court
Fishers, IN
46038-9050

STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other
names up (6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR Name as number 6 on
the list.

STEP 3:
Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original
as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I
think there is close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the
more you post, the more money you make! ---

DIRECTIONS ----- HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS------------

Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting.
Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to
the bottom of this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will
copy the entire letter into the computers memory.

Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the
blank page. >From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of
the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list.

Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your
postings in different sittings, you'll always have this file to go back to.

Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various
newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)

Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by
highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit
menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they
scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post
message button. You're done with your first one!

Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different
newsgroupes and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30
seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE
MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE!! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it!
You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may
eventually want to rent a P.O.Box
due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay
anonymous, you can invent a name to use, as long as the mail person will
deliver it.

**JUST MAKESURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.**

Now the WHY part: Out of 200 postings, say I receive only 5 replies (a very
low example). So then I made $5.00 with my name at #6 on the letter. Now, each
of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each
with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that
is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my
name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00!
Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3
and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $626.00! OK, now
here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters
with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me
$3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200
newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react
I will receive $15,625,00! With a original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING!
When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in
the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your
name at number 6 again. And start posting again. The thing to remember is, do
you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the
internet and reading these articles everyday, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So can
you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so... People have said,
"what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What
are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and
new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everday and are
willing to give it a try? Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every
day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember, play
FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will work.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY MANDATORY THAT ALL
STEPS ARE FOLLOWED IN ORDER FOR THIS TO BE SUCCESSFUL!

If you just stop and really think, there is absolutely NO REASON that this
opportunity cannot work for you. It is legal, honest, and will benefit all (not
just you who participate.

POP mail server is not installed automatically in 5.2. Look for the
server in the rpm's and install it.

I am also trying to set something simiar to that up... but I am using a
debian linux box as the server and a second debian box as a client.

it looks something like this

win98-|
          |
win98-|-linux(client)--|--internet------linux(vpn server)-----novell
server
          | |
win98-| |
                              |
remote dial in---------|

right now I am working on the server.. I am using VTUN witch suports
encrypted packets as well as ip tunnling.

I would like any sugestion on this matter or if there is a better way of
doing this. I would also like to know if anyone is doing this so that
you can log into a novell server over a connction like this?
