which distribution of linux are you using? which version of the kernel
are you using. i am using Red Hat 5.2 and kernel 2.0.36-0.7. i have
the same card, and also had problems getting linux to recognize it
during installation. to get it to work, you need to know the IRQ and
I/O settings for your network card. then you can edit /etc/conf.modules
to add the following:

alias eth0 eepro
options eth0 i/o=[your I/O settings] irq=[your interupt setting]

do not use the brackets [].

alternatively, you can use the netcfg utility in the X windows
enviroment.

i hope this helps.

Yes you can. Look in the examples/autofs directory of the samba
source. If you don't have the source code, go get it from
http://samba.anu.edu.au/samba/. There is a script called mount.smb
which you need to install (which is not hard, look at the doc in the
same directory). This script intercepts mount calls and passes them
with the correct parms to smbmount. Your example below would now be:
'mount -t smb /win9xpx/C /mountdir/win9xc'.
This allows you to use the automounter (worked for me) or fstab (I
assume) to mount your NT drives. Good luck.

Unless both PCs have a valid assigned IP address, you'll need IP
masquerading as well. Private IP addresses never make it across a router.

Don't get me wrong. I CERTAINLY don't think "Authorities" are God. In
fact, in most cases, they seem to be kind of screwed up.

But I say it again, why would you care what they read - UNLESS of
course, you were committing a crime. No one wants to answer that

You send loads of your private information to the IRS, and willingly.

Don't want to answer that, and the very fact that anyone would even ask pisses

Now you know how people feel when *their* privacy is invaded.

Who does? The IRS gets the bare minimum from me required to comply with
the law.

Who's not complaining? I write my congresscritters regularly. If it were up

Microsoft's management would be sacrificed to Finagle.

Sure this will work.

1) You'll need two network cards so you'll need to get them working first.
2) Setup eth0 using your cable modem setup. (May need dhcpcd if your ISP
uses dhcp)
3) Setup a subnet on eth1 as your internal network (192.168.1.1 mask
255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0)
4) Use ipfwadm if < 2.2.0 kernel else use ipchains to set up masquerading.

Look out for:

When installing two network cards you may need to pass the kernel some info
via lilo to get them detected.
i.e. append = "ether=0,0,eth0 ether=0,0,eth1"

If you compiled your network cards as modules you won't have to do this.
Simply choose your network cards in the kernel config section of the control
panel.

Then of course there is the problem w/ conflicts...

My ISP , Comcast @HOME , uses DHCP. However, my IP address is static. My
machine is dual boot 95/Redhat 5.2. Once my config worked in 95, I simply
set the static info for eth0 under Linux. Wala, I'm on the net 24/7 static
IP masquerading as many machines as I want. Cool!

Hmm... what else....

Oh, beware of the hackers. You'll have have them hitting your telnet port
within a day of putting the machine online. Look closely at your
/etc/inetd.conf and get rid of everything you don't need. Setup
/etc/hosts.allow /etc/hosts.deny properly! Deny ALL: ALL until you know what
you are doing. Upgrade to 5.2 and get all the updates else you'll have
holes for the hackers.

Actually, it's just "unsupported" at this point, but it works fine. I'm
using Samba 2.0.3 as a PDC for a small office network. Not all the PDC
functionality is supported, but for single-logon and roaming profiles,
it seems to be the easiest way to go.

That's even "supported" in the current Samba releases.

Hi folks,
I have a small net with a Linux box providing IP-masquerading services
for my internal net to a PPP link to the outside world. PPP is managed
by diald. I have a very simple set of rules for ipfwadm that accepts all
traffic (once I get everything working then I'll add security). I an
NT4.0, a Win95, and a MAC OS 8.1 (Open Transport) client. Everything
works quite well except for the MAC client which is unable to send
e-mail with any kind of attachment. When I try to send an attachment the
send hangs. I have tried this with both Netscape 4.5 and Eudora Pro 4.x.

Could this be an MRU/MTU problem?? Any ideas??

You've probably got the old RH apache server - there was a mistake in
the config files.
Add htm to the text/html value in the "mime.types" file like so:
text/html html htm
Remember to make the server reread it's config file.

Alternatively see if FP can be configured to save the full extension.

You didn't say which distro you are using, or if you're using Intel or Sparc
or whatever. Assuming you're using RedHat on a x86, the new boot image will
be /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage. Just copy it to /boot and rewrite
your /etc/lilo.conf file (keeping the old kernel as an alternate just in
case), and reboot with the new kernel. This all should be in the README file
and the docs located in the source tree.
