Yep. Upgrade to the latest kernel! (Don't you just hate it when that
turns out to be the answer).
8-))), No I do not mind. I like updating the kernel even for
half as good a reason.

hda4, hdb4, and hdc4 in a raid 5 with no hotspare.
With 2.4.3 XFS kernels, it seems that a raid 5 does not come
up correctly if the first disk is unavailable. The error message

matter if you had a new or the same hard disk. We then
tried the patch Igno Molnar sent regarding the issue.

RAID 4/5 does not seem to be working properly with
the patches I have applied from Neil Brown's site
for kernel 2.4.0-test11. When raid5 is in the kernel,
I cannot boot. When it is a module, the oops shown
below occurs with the lsmod showing:
