when using ub with your patch i get a lot further:
the device is detected and uba+uba1 entries appear.
I can mount the device correctly.
Copying the files down and comparing them with the originals gives correct
results.

I've just tried a USB->RS232 adapter (BAFO BF-810), it's PL2303 based
one, and I have a bad problem with it. My current kernel is
2.6.13-rc3-mm3, but I've also tried it with 2.6.12-rc5-mm1 - the same
problem. I can also try recent -rc5 and -rc4-mm1, will compile them now.

I'm writing a new usb-storage subdriver to support card readers based on the
Alauda chip.
I've sniffed some data and I am building up an idea of how the thing works. I
have attempted to put pen to paper but I am having trouble sending anything on
the control pipe.
