I played with it again and it's now clear:
Press Caps-Lock and the mouse goes dead.

When I move the mouse while I press CL again and again, sometimes the
mouse moves a few pixels.
If I press nothing, the mouse remains dead -> plug out adapter, wait, plug
in -> works again


Why it wasn't clear from the beginning: the incident of moving mouse _and_
pressing CL at the same time never happens quite often, and if you press
CL and sometime later move the mouse the connection wasn't clear :)
