1) I've heard Microsoft Windows thinks the vendor-unique op x23 of Scsi Dasd should mean "Read Format Capacities", which in turn should behave something like as described in copies of <ftp://ftp.seagate.com/sff/INF-8070.PDF> aka the Compaq LS-120 technical manual. 2) I've also heard the binary-code-only of Microsoft issues this op without working very hard to confirm that the device in question doesn't give some other, perhaps media-damaging, meaning to that vendor-unique op. Truth? Slander? Me, I've never seen the source. 3) Me, I found this copy of the July 2001 Sff 8070i r1.3 pdf just now via the query <http://google.yahoo.com/bin/query?p=sff+8070+pdf&hc=0&hs=0>. > In short: So how did I know to ask for sff 8070 pdf? Well, that's a longer story ... 4) Please reply to me person-to-person if reply-to-all was Not correct netiquette here. Me, I'm listening at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. > Re: [usb-storage] Hack to make Datafab KECF-USB work >>> Martin Wilck <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 02/06/02 04:52PM >>> > CompactFlash + Microdrive Reader ... > I saw ... Win2k driver (native) sends ... > SCSI command 0x23 to the device > (unsuccessfully, the device signals ILLEGAL REQUEST). > What command is that? I found it in no command reference. 5) Which Scsi standard to apply varies by op x12 Inquiry (dataBytes[x02] & x07) "Ansi-approved version". Let's suppose that says x02 (Scsi 2) or x00 (take your pick). 6) Which portion of the chosen Scsi standard to apply then varies by op x12 Inquiry (dataBytes[x00] & x1F) "Peripheral device type". Let's supposed that says x00 "Direct-access device (e.g. magnetic disk)". 7) Then via <http://www.t10.org/drafts.htm> we find the 1993 <ftp://ftp.t10.org/t10/drafts/s2/s2-r10l.pdf> says "The following operation codes are vendor-specific ..., 23h, ....". 8) At <http://www.bswd.com/cornucop.htm> we see an acknowledgement of the influence the Compaq/Microsoft deployment of the LS-120 had on the definition of the Atapi variation of Scsi. That page suggests that once upon a time the link <ftp://ftp.seagate.com/sff/SFF-8070.pdf> worked. Hence our <http://google.yahoo.com/bin/query?p=sff+8070+pdf&hc=0&hs=0> query. 9) I'm wondering if here I have found one of the few other people on Earth who care who says what op x23 means when? Hope this helps, thanks in advance.
