Compile it as part of a normal kernel build, not standalone.
That means "make menuconfig; make dep; make bzImage modules"
and so on.
One way to do that is to use a current www.bzImage.org kernel;
if the RH7.1 kernel includes "usbnet", it's (pleasant) news to me!
