Seriously. 2.2 never had fully working USB mass storage support. If you can't manage to install 2.6 on that old machine, at least go to 2.4. Lots of USB storage devices have two different vendors: one to make the disk or flash memory and the other to make the USB interface. Naturally you see one vendor name when looking in /proc/bus/usb/devices and the other name when looking in /proc/scsi/scsi. As for solving your problem, we need more information. Try turning on the usb-storage verbose debugging switch in the kernel configuration, then post the dmesg output showing what happens when you plug the stick into the non-working system. When hotplug mounts the stick it seems to use the "usb-name", creating a dir call /media/<*>Prolific<*>. Do you have any kernel logs when you connect the device on "computer 1"? Also, can you look in /proc/interrupts to see if your USB Host Controller is getting interrupts? [Linux-usb-users] USB-Stick doesnt load
Running Suse 9.0 kernel 2.4.21-99. Trying to mount an usb-stick Sandisk Cruzer mini 128MB. Had to modprobe usb-storage to get it running once. Disconnected without unmounting. Won't run again even after reboot and un/reloading usb-storage. [Linux-usb-users] usb stick problem
I have a SEITEC USB stick. I found that it should be supported by Linux (on the Internet), and indeed it´s recognized and I can even mount it, but storing data on it is a problem. Very often the program that writes to the usb stick (´cp´, for example), copies some files, but stops before he´s actually done. The program ´hangs´, and it´s not busy. No error messages, nothing. I can´t even shut down my system appropiately - the ´shutdown´ command hangs too (I think because he wants to unmount the usb stick), and I have to press the 'off' button. What to do?
