OK this is what I did. Booted up into single user mode Reset the passwords for the users Rebooted in the previously broken system Logged in as if nothing had happened. So I have cured the symptom but still don't have any clue as to what the cause was. I'll check my /var/log for any hints that

Even though this a Linux list, we Linux users are always concerned for our brethren who are in error (Windows Users). The most obvious solution would be to switch to a Linux OS. SuSe is German made and is user friendly. But, your problem may not be with your Win system ( such as I hate to say it)

As much as I'd love to blame this on KDE, i think you caused this mess. You can't copy .kde2 to .kde. The configuration file layout changed in a huge way. So basically what is occuring is that KDE2 is looking for the appropriate config file to write the changes you are making, isn't finding it,
