Well, problem solved, in part.
I figured out that I really didn't have any application/pdf defined in my /etc/mailcap
or ~/.mailcap files. I had been using acroread to read all my octet-stream
attachements. After I added the mimetype application/pdf, I kept trying to read a pdf
attachment in my Mailread file. I kept getting octet-stream, no matter what
I did. Frustration. IT TURNS OUT.......
That the mimetype, as far as mutt is concerned, is determined at the time
the mail is received, not when the attachment is viewed ! I am not sure if mutt or the
sending mail program gets the final word in determining what the mimetype
is, though.  I am too lazy to find out.
But, all is well for now.
