Do you have a line that looks like this:

LISTEN 1688/sshd
IIRC ( having given up on vmware - is virtualbox an option? ) you can
create up to 3 network connections, one of which offers networking to
the host, and one is bridged. Is the bridged network set up on your
Ubuntu client?
