I stumbled across this while working on livepatch self-tests, which like
the ftrace self-tests, specify $(CC_FLAGS_FTRACE) to ensure that target
functions are indeed trace-able.
On ppc64le, v5.0 fails the self-tests on my machine:
% gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 8.2.1 20180905
