There are a few documents here and there on the drive, though nothing as
interesting as those that you found! I realize now that due to the style
and age of the drive, that the sounds are definitely normal. I just forgot
about the drives of this age that I heard in some friends' PC's long ago.

Cool! Glad you got her working! Previous owner leave any interesting
documents? I got a profile a while back that was full of engineering
drawings!

The widget is the most unique sounding drive I've ever heard. Mine runs
very quietly actually, save the squeaka de squeak of the head voice coil.
I notice it makes the mouse sound when it has to make a long seek, and a
more regular hard disk sound for the short ones.

Re: She Lives!! Widget is running!

2005-11-07 Thread macmoni

Hi Chris,

congratulation !

What are normal Widget sounds?

In general very loud, compared to the nowadays hf-drives :-)
...if an occasional chirp-like sound (rapid movement of R/W head
motors?) is normal.
Yes, that's "normal". I also have that sound on my drives.
Approximately once to twice each 5 minutes, if I remember. But lasting
only approx 0.5 seconds.
How long do things like the calculator, for instance, take to be
loaded?
If you think of the Calculator from Mac OS running as emulation on a
Lisa, the application will last less than 2 seconds and it appears on
the screen, when loaded from the widget with my Lisa.
I've never had the pleasure of working with a Lisa before, so I don't
know what to expect.
Treat the old Lady with respect and she will honour that - with respect
:-)

greetings TOM from Bavaria

She Lives!! Widget is running!

2005-11-06 Thread Chris Riedl
After putting two and two together, I knew the Widget had a controller
board problem somewhere. From inspecting and cleaning the other boards in
the Lisa, I discovered that Apple had used the cheaper style of IC sockets
on the boards, stamped vs machined contacts. The machined sockets don't
seem to hold up as well over time, so I figured I'd do what I normally do in
desperation, reseat ICs in order to clean the pins. I must have done
something right, as the next boot, the Widget fired up to life, the brake
clacked, and the Lisa began to boot!!! I am gathering that one of the
EPROMs must have not been making contact with the socket, thus the
controller board wasn't running at all, and the Lisa would rarely see the
Widget, if at all. I would certainly suggest trying to reseat all socketed
IC's on any controller boards before throwing in the towel on a drive.

I'm curious to know now, though. What are normal Widget sounds? I'm
not used to drives of this vintage, so I don't know if an occasional
chirp-like sound (rapid movement of R/W head motors?) is normal.
Additionally, is there a benchmark to see if the drive is working optimally?
How long do things like the calculator, for instance, take to be loaded?
I've never had the pleasure of working with a Lisa before, so I don't know
what to expect.

Thanks,
Chris
