[pfSense] Full Backup/Restore for pfSense

2013-05-04 Thread Odhiambo Washington
Again, at the risk of being so uninformed, I'd like to ask why dump/restore
are not part of pfSense.
Would the inclusion increase the distro size beyond expectations?

I am thinking that I could use dump/restore to create several
instances/installs of pfSense without necessarily having to go on an
installation/customization spree for packages.

[pfSense] looking for IPv6 pfSense setup

2013-05-04 Thread Eugen Leitl

Hi -- I've got the following IPv6 information from an ISP:

IPv6 prefix (/64)
IPv6 address gateway - these on WAN do work
for pfSense.

Now I also have an additional /56 routed, which
is given as prefix and next-hop. Where do I put
that information, and how do I distribute the
individual /64 addresses do individual devices
on LAN? I think globally routable static IPv6
addresses for each device are best.

Does anyone have a few screenshot or just generic
information on how to configure this?

Thanks!

P.S. Unrelated, in my home pfSense for cable modem
with DHCP for IPv4 and 6to4 tunnel for IPv6 and
Track Interface as IPv6 configuration type for
LAN I sometimes have no IPv6 connectivity on
Windows 7 (while I can ping6 on pfSense just fine).
Any idea what is breaking here?

But they are included.

Look under Diagnostics - Backup/Restore. This feature has been there since
M0n0wall, although it's functionality has been enhanced in pfSense.

2013-05-04 Thread b...@todoo.biz
Hello,

You can check my settings here… Ok, they are in French, but It is more or less
the same as your user case.

http://www.osnet.eu/fr/content/pfsense-en-ipv6-sur-un-lien-dsl-ovh

There are images, that might help you figure out how things are done / network
topology.

Basically :

1. get the /64 routed address on the WAN (generally using DHCP6 but might be
different depending on your provider)

2. configure RA as unmanaged with the right settings on your LAN

3. Allow traffic on the interface using FW rules.

This has work very well for me and has been confirmed by my ISP to work.
Of course, this setting might not work for you, but you'll get the big picture.

Enjoy.

Re: [pfSense] Full Backup/Restore for pfSense

2013-05-04 Thread James Records
I'm experimenting with something like this (from pfsense box):

dd if=/dev/sd0 | gzip | ssh user@host dd of=/tmp/pfsense_bkup.gzip

Technically the box will boot and load the needed packages, but if your
doing many boxes and package installation is slow, there is a decent need
for something like this.

I netboot alix boxes and grab the default pfsense embedded image over ftp
and pipe it to dd to get it on the cf, but it would save me a bunch of
time, if this above method works of package installs, its not that big of
deal when doing 1-2 boxes but now I've got a project that is going to need
~35, so a templatized image is a much better solution for me than normal
configs.

Re: [pfSense] Full Backup/Restore for pfSense

2013-05-04 Thread b...@todoo.biz
Hi,

I've been reading this thread with interest.

Honestly I don't see any good reason to use dd to create a clone of your
config.
It will be a total waste of time compared to the classic install.

The path that I would rather take will be :

1. Classic install with the version that suits your needs for all 35 CF cards.

2. Create an sh script or whatever language you like and mount the card in a VM
or on a FBSD / Linux.

3. Restore config and files that are of interest to you.

4. Unmount your card.

A dump with a CF card of 4Gb will take ages if you use a 1Gb… It'll still take
a very long time compared to classic install.
Furthermore you can use n CF card reader and parallelize the tasks.

If you select the right files you should be fine with your install.

Sincerely yours.

G.B.

Re: [pfSense] Full Backup/Restore for pfSense

2013-05-04 Thread Michael Schuh
there is no reason to make a entire disk dump.
equal which tool. from my point of view.

i use pfSense now since the beginnings.

just do a backup over the menu
install a new box
open the web interface and stop the wizard
open the restore over diagnostics, put he backed config in
and look that you have the wan interface connected and selected right
( if different nic types)

packages will be pulled automatically after the restart of the box.
(if connected to the WAN-Net)
if you backed up also the rrd-data, those graphs will also be fine...

the only reason i can see to make a full backup is squid or other dynamic
data.

but as the kind of data say, they are dynamically rebuild.
log files from squid or something else can you transfer per tar through
nc/ssh p.e.

 Hi,

I've been reading this thread with interest.

Honestly I don't see any good reason to use dd to create a clone of your
 config.
It will be a total waste of time compared to the classic install.

The path that I would rather take will be :

 1. Classic install with the version that suits your needs for all 35 CF
 cards.

 2. Create an sh script or whatever language you like and mount the card in
a VM or on a FBSD / Linux.

 3. Restore config and files that are of interest to you.

 4. Unmount your card.

A dump with a CF card of 4Gb will take ages if you use a 1Gb… It'll still
take a very long time compared to classic install.
Furthermore you can use n CF card reader and parallelize the tasks.

If you select the right files you should be fine with your install.

 Sincerely yours.

 G.B.

  Found this:

  https://github.com/pfsense/pfsense/blob/master/etc/rc.create_full_backup

 https://github.com/pfsense/pfsense/blob/master/etc/rc.restore_full_backup

I'm modifying the create script to send the image to a remote server,
but this might be exactly what I want. Would be nice to wrap some of this
in the UI, but I'm doing fine with ssh access to these commands for now.

dd is fine unless you have a running database, like with Snort. You'd
have to employ some sort of a dump and then dd.

  Hi Jim,

Diagnostics - Backup/Restore only handles configuration backup. I am
talking about the BSD dump/restore for the whole disk - if that elaborates
 my needs.

  But they are included.

Look under Diagnostics - Backup/Restore. This feature has been there
since M0n0wall, although it's functionality has been enhanced in pfSense.

Again, at the risk of being so uninformed, I'd like to ask why
dump/restore are not part of pfSense.
Would the inclusion increase the distro size beyond expectations?

I am thinking that I could use dump/restore to create several
instances/installs of pfSense without necessarily having to go on an
 installation/customization spree for packages.
