I prefer:

then:

A bit more effort is required - but otherwise it's a simple solution.
Run VMWare - you can emulate any OS pretty much, from 3.11, to Vista - it
works on linux/mac/win...
You can test sites live, local and no monthly fee...

The solution I use to solve that is something like this:
div class=wrap
div class=contentYou contend div here!/div
/div
then have:
.wrap {text-align: center;}
.content {text-align: left; width: 550px; margin: 0 auto;}
that centers is for all browsers. (from memory, I rarely need this anymore.
