are you sure that you're using the right mousedriver? Sounds to me like the
wrong one :).
Under RH you can use mousconfig in the consol to configure the mouse. If you
don't get the right one through auto-probing, try one after the other. There

It sounds like the server is not set up to allow remote connections to X or your
display manager.
This could be a firewalling problem (if you are running a firewall) or a config
problem with XDM, KDM or GDM (whichever you are running) or Xserver.
