Re: [LUAU] Radius dialup on FreeBSD

2006-04-07 Thread Jim Thompson
I had Free Radius (on freebsd) running for a while, but I was using
it for WPA authentication against a couple APs (and that machine has
been

replaced by a Mac Mini for the RADIUS parts).

You don't say how you're dialing in (PPP?), and you don't give us any
debugging output. You don't even show us the entries in the users
file, so its a bit difficult to help you.

Aloha Gurus,

Does any one have experience with Free Radius? We have installed it
and the [EMAIL PROTECTED] uning PW: xyz123 works ( It was setup by
another person) but, when I add for example [EMAIL PROTECTED] PW:
dog, into the users file it wont connect. Dials and makes an
attempt but drops the connection.
I have cheched the How to's and FAQ's. I have rebooted the server.
I have checked the Clients listings and the 2 IP's are ok. ( Or I
don't think the test name would work.)
Am I missing adding something to another file for each additional
user?

Any suggestions?

[LUAU] a new use for hosef donations?

2006-04-07 Thread Jim Thompson
There has been a lot of recent discussion about what to do with PII
machines. Lets build a cluster. (Where can we find the room/power/
AC?)

http://hardware.slashdot.org/hardware/06/04/07/2225227.shtml

The ACCRC is the relatively famous computer recycling non-profit
in Berkeley that builds clusters out of old hardware. Make Blog has
an article about the Center's plans to build a cluster out of the
equipment people bring to recycle at Make Faire later this month. The
ACCRC geeks are now able to integrate PII's or better into the
cluster, which will be powered by Vegetable Oil and run Parallel
Knoppix.

You can do a rough and tumble calculation. To match a lowest-powered (
cheapest) Sempron you can find in the market, you will need at least 10
PII's clustered together. Here on the island, we are paying $0.21 per
KWHr. At 150 W per PII, we are talking about 7 bucks a day, or more
than $2,500 a year for the utility bill. And this is just one of the
(more manageable) problems; the parts cost additional money, and
servicing such a monster will be worse than a nightmare.

You can find a Sempron/MB combo for around $100. So, is it worth the
effort? The key issue should be how to design an optimized system, sell
the idea, and help getting the fund (a Niagara would be ideal for the
Isle). Of course, fund-raising is much easier said than done, and you
won't get the same kind of instant gratification as collecting used PCs
would give you. Wayne

[LUAU] New Round of LayOff at Sun

2006-04-07 Thread Hawaii Linux Institute
It seems that Sun is beginning a new round of layoffs. This has become
so common, no one cares to talk about it any more (unless someone you
know happens to be affected).

BTW, while Sun's Solaris developers do not seem to care about
user-friendliness, a couple of OpenSolaris LiveCDs have come out. I
have been playing with Belenix and NexentaOS. The latter has its own
repository, the former will be able to use Blastware.org (Solaris
repository) in its next version. Wayne
