Sun and Ubuntu seem to have some rhythm. Java is essentially "open", the FSF likes the move, Ubuntu runs on the recent SPARC boxes, and we should shortly see .debs for java showing up in the "free" apt repositories.

But there has to be more to it than this. We have a 1+1=2 situation, but Sun/Cannonical/... have to be planning something super- linear, a clear response to the Microsoft/Novell deal. Something that gets the Enterprise to buy SPARC+Cannonical support by the boatload.

But what is it?

The other alternative is that Sun is increasingly desperate to throw a shoulder into the .Net/C# framework.
