Because I was able to login, I was able to press "Print Screen" a few times
in the hope of getting a picture of the corrupted graphics. After I logged
in, avoiding screen corruption (booting from cold, removing the 'quiet'
'splash' kernel parameters), I had a look at those screen shots

locked. Typed my password in. System then (visually) unlocked itself,
paused briefly and then locked me back out again. You can test this more
quickly by using the keyboard shortcut of CTRL+ALT+l
