Thanks for bringing this up. The instructions we give perhaps assume too much familiarity with mailing lists and how they work. Nearly every mailing list I've been on requires you to join the mailing list first. We could let the email through, but then we'd run the risk of someone replying only to the list, which the sender would then never see. So instead we reject and hope the user can interpret the message to mean that they need to change their status from non-member. It doesn't seem like you get any links pointing you in the right direction.
That said, I'd like to advise we do the following changes: 1. Change the website to read "Instructions to join the list and post to it can be found at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users"; instead of "Send an email to…" 2. Change the rejection message to "You need to first become a member of the mailing list in order to post to it. Instructions to do so can be found at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users"; If either of those two items were implemented, would that have solved your problem?
