[Lubuntu-desktop] When will we have Lubuntu 10.04 beta 2?

2010-04-11 Thread PCMan
Ubuntu beta 2 just came out.
So when will we have Lubuntu 10.04 beta 2?
Before releasing beta 2, please get the hotest pcmanfm2 and libfm from
git since there are some important fixes.
It's a pity that Lubuntu didn't enter Ubuntu family this time, but
we'll be ready at the time of 10.10.
At that time, our google summer of code projects should be finished so
things are going to be improved.
In addition, as upower and udisks now have stable releases, it's time
to support them and provide better user experience.

In the past we always rushed to make new releases for LXDE components
to test new features.
Now as the projects grows and more and more people are using it, we
need to meet the quality requirement of being a major desktop
environment.
So a delay to release new components is sometimes better than to
release a buggy one.
Let wait and see what will happen at the time of 10.10.
I bet it will be the best Lubuntu release ever.

Cheers!

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [LXDE Translation] PCManFM 0.9.4 beta2 will be released in two days

2010-04-11 Thread PCMan
IIRC I haven't touch the strings due to the freeze, but it's always a
good idea to check in pootle or transifex again to make sure there are
no untranslated strings.

For the future release of PCManFM/Libfm, there will be periods for
freeze like this, so we can get proper translation and testing before
release. :-)

This is the first step toward quality assurance.

i think because we are not in the ubuntu-family yet we dont have to bring a
beta2 when ubuntu releases one. We should take the time, include some more
programs (such as games) and release it when its ready. Even if the first
lubuntu is not an official *buntu, it should be a great, well tested distro.
In my opinion, we dont have to follow the canonical timetable that strict.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] When will we have Lubuntu 10.04 beta 2?

2010-04-11 Thread PCMan
This makes sense.
Since we're not in Ubuntu family, there is no need to follow ubuntu schedule.
Let's take the time and make a good release rather than do things in a hurry.
Another benefit for the delay I found:
After ubuntu 10.04 release, there must be tons of bugs found. This is
predictable.
So, when we release, many bugs should have been fixed then we can make
a more stable release, isn't it?.

Agreed. My experience especially with ZevenOS releases shows me that
aprox. 1 month after Ubuntu release is a good time to release a ubuntu
based distro as almost every critical bug has been fixed till then.

BTW, several minutes ago, a bug in libfm causing crashes was fixed by Eugene.
Please update again. :-)
Actually you can try to do daily build from git since it's updated very often.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Fwd: bug / problem in detailed list view

2010-04-11 Thread PCMan
Please can anyone reproduce this bug? It doesn't happen on my laptop.

Dear PCMan,

first: thanks for your great work!

second: the problem:
On https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/SubTeams/TestingSubTeam/pcmanfm2Testing;
you said that you can't reproduce the problem with highlighting in detailed
view.

Because for me it's very annoying too, I'd like to describe it in more detail:

- using lubuntu with the most recent updates and with the desktop-ppa and
proposed-updates enabled.

- using pcmanfm 0.9.3 with detailed list view as default view for every folder

- At first start and at the fist screen I can select each folder and each file
with one click. And with the right-click I could open, open with, cut, ...
and so on.

- But if I go into a folder I cannot select any file or subfolder. With a
double-click I can open it, but I cannot selcect it with a one-click. And so
with a right-click I have only new, past, select all, ... and so on, but not
open, cut, ...

- If I change the view to compact view, then I can select what I want and
after that, if I change back to detailed list view then I can select the
items in that folder too. But after going into another folder the problem is
there and I cannot select anything.

Please take a look and fix the problem.
The detailed list view is the default view for a lot of people.

Thanks in advance!

Best regards

Marcus Daub

There does appear to be a problem with Detailed List View. I’m not sure
if this is the same thing as described above.
If you select Detailed List View then open a folder and right click on a
file you get the menu with New, Paste, Select All, etc. IF you then Left
click on it and then right click you get the correct context menu with
Open, Open With... , etc. If you then right click on a different type
of file you get the same context menu as previous.
E.g. If you left click then right click on a tar.gz file you get Open,
Xarchiver, Open With..., etc. If you then right click on a PDF file you
still get Open, Xarchiver, Open With... If you then left click and right
click on a PDF you get a context menu with Open, Document Viewer, Open
With..., etc. I.e then correct context menu. This only occurs in
Detailed List View.
Hope this makes sense and is the same problem Marcus described.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] When will we have Lubuntu 10.04 beta 2?

2010-04-11 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi,

I've always advised people that lubuntu has to run a little later than
'main'. I'd back this with the fact the devs for 'main' did hold a beta back
by 24 hours because of issues; in fact going back to 6.06 was help back
precisely because of that. I totally support and am in 100% favour of
yourselves holding a release back and leave it marked as beta until you are
all ready. There are plenty enough people already 'playing' with Lubuntu to
make the first full 'official' release a good one, we are patient and you
possibly under estimate the general level of good-will that there is for
this new member of the family.

Besides, have you ever watched the wildlife programmes on Meerkats? Lubuntu
will be a pretty darn good Maverick Meerkat :-D

Thanks and regards to you all,

Phill.

[Lubuntu-desktop] State of the development

2010-04-11 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

I think it's a good time to do a quick summarize of the state of the
development of Lubuntu.

== About Lubuntu in the *buntu family ==

As you may know, Lubuntu will probably not be officially part of the
*buntu family. It doesn't mean we will never be part of it.

More important, it will not stop us to release an iso. The question will
be : what is the statut of this iso. Stable ? Final ? RC ? Beta ? For
now, I'm inclined to make the statut RC, to mark we are not officially
in Ubuntu, but target to have a stable release.

Target for this release is still like others *buntu, end of April. We
may have some delay, depending of the state of Lubuntu at this time.

== About the state of Lubuntu ==

There are several main components which are very young : pcmanfm was
rewritten, and lxdm is quite new. I think the current state of pcmanfm
is quite good. For lxdm, due to many changes in the boot process of
Ubuntu, it was quite unstable during Lucid. I hope main issues are
resolved with the version in Beta2.

To be general, I'm quite happy with the performance result so far,
memory usage is low, CPU usage not too bad. I'm still think it needs
many more tests. General use cases should be ok, but intensive and
not-classic use cases can be more problematic. That's why reporting bugs
is important :-) We also lack some features for everyday uses. As we
can't fix them for this release, some works will remain for futur
release :-)

To summarize, it's a good starting point, a preview of what Lubuntu is
capable.

Feedbacks over the web are mostly positive, it's a nice indicator, but
doesn't mean it's perfect.

To finish, it's not a technical point of view, but I think we have the
best artwork of all *buntu version ;-)

== About the work needed ==

There are still a lot of works to do, I'll do a summarize when the final
release will be out. For now, keep testing and report bugs please :-)

Regards,
Julien Lavergne
