[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Users

2011-12-16 Thread Philip
Hi all,

First, let me say thank you to everyone on the Lubuntu team. I have
been using Lubuntu for over a year now, and it is quite possibly the
fastest, most efficient operating system I have ever used (and I have
used many). Keep up the extraordinary work.

A few weeks ago on this list, a question was raised about the current
number of Lubuntu users. I was a little surprised that no one had a
clear idea, and that estimates varied widely. It seems a little
dangerous from a development standpoint to have so little information
about your userbase, doesn't it? Wouldn't it be valuable to determine
a way of gathering data about how many people use Lubuntu, and how
they use it?

I don't ask this because I want to burden you with another task. I
may be able to offer some help myself. I like Lubuntu, and intend to
use it well into the future. But operating systems have demonstrated
a clear tendency to eventually lose touch with and alienate their
userbase. I think Lubuntu developers, being better than average,
might recognize this common problem, and take steps to safeguard
against it. One safeguard might be the collection of this data.

What do you think?

Lubuntu does already have some marketing materials -
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Marketing I think the best way
forward, is as others have mentioned, is to try and assimilate with
the main marketing team - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MarketingTeam - so
that efforts aren't doubled up and you get the best bang for buck.

Most of the issues you will suffer in Lubuntu are most appropriate for
the Ubuntu forums anyway as Lubuntu is Ubuntu with a different desktop
environment. Splitting this up will only confuse users and possibly
lock them out of getting assistance from others just because no one
specific to Lubuntu knows what to do. I'm not a forums expert but the
likes of phillw who I know has a lot to do with it has always
suggested using the [lubuntu] tag on the forum if required.

Depending on what you need funds for. Canonical will never had out
cash support to anyone but the can offer some resources for special
events if need be (for example approved LoCo teams can get marketing
materials for conferences they will have a booth at). Anything else
will have to be donated by someone. If you work on a plan on what it's
used for you might find someone willing to donate.

Not sure, from memory that was a username switcher of some kind so
maybe look for something like that?

Hi A. J.

I've had a quick chat with a couple of people regarding advertising, the
advice is to make yourself known via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuAdvertsStart there and see how things
progress.

Phill.

Join the Ubuntu marketing team and adapt their stuff and use the skills that
have been developed there. Having joined the Ubuntu family I see no point in
isolating ourselves from it.

A separate forum is just unnecessary extra work and if we isolate ourselves,
the general problems will have to be answered by the smaller number of Lubuntu
users and not by the fine collection of experts Ubuntu already has. Questions
and experience will just get spread more thinly. Just stick with the Ubuntu one
and tag post with Lubuntu if needed.

Great!

I see no reason why we couldn't have a forum-Ubuntu has one, Kubuntu has one,
presumably Xubuntu is gnashing their teeth to have one...

About adding your name, find the location of the default panel pic and write
over it in gimp. :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Me again :)

2011-12-16 Thread amjjawad HOOHAA
Hello everyone,

Long story short:

1- I'm thinking about a Marketing Team which will be dedicated to Lubuntu
Marketing and its members will focus ONLY on Marketing. As always, I'm
willing to contribute and join but I just thought to propose the idea here
and SO SORRY if this is not the right place to do that :)

2- What are the chances of having a dedicated Forum JUST for Lubuntu? or
maybe a Sub-Forum either on Ubuntu Forum or LXDE Forum? needless to say I'm
more than up to this but again, I'd like to propose the idea here.

3- Lubuntu is an official variant of Ubuntu now. Regarding the funds and
stuff like that, is Canonical taking care of that? what if I find someone
who can denote or help us financially? I understand it's free OS but I'm
working on that ... I'm looking for someone to denote or help us
financially.

4- Like GNOME 2.xx (say Ubuntu 10.04), how can I add my username to the
panel? is there anyway? in Ubuntu 10.04, I can see my username on the top
panel but how hard or easy is it to do the same on Lubuntu?

That's all for now.

Thanks :)
