Hi Glen,

Update Mananger can be added to Lubuntu, it is one of two options for
updating given at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/DocumentationHelp#Keep
Lubuntu up-to-date

 Hello,

may I ask why Lubuntu 10.04 does´nt ship with an update manager?
I thought it is because of dependencies but I am just asking to be sure.

Anyways, if Update manager is too bloated for Lubuntu I think we should
 create some simple update tool.
The tool would be very simple and be just like a graphical version of
 ¨sudo apt-get update¨.
I think it should look a bit like the regular update manager on Ubuntu.

An update manager is really necessary: do you think your grandma would
open the terminal and type ¨sudo apt-get update¨ or open synaptic?
No she would click on something like update manager or lxupdater (my
 idea XD )

As I am not a programmer but a translator with some interface design
experience, I made a mock-up of the application which should come with
this mail. Just to be sure a link:

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Update tool Lubuntu 10.10?

2010-05-17 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi Julien,

I am assuming (so may well be wrong) that we are going to keep Synaptic
Package Manager? If so, the memory usage for Update Manager should not be
any higher than running an instance of Synaptic. I know there was also
debate about turning automatic updates off (I use that for minimal
installations on Low RAM Machines so the user won't think the machine has
frozen if it goes off and does an automatic update) just as the 'quick
search' for Synaptics is disabled by default for reasons of slowing a low
powered machine down.

Regards,

Phill.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Inclusion in 10.10 [Disk Mounting]

2010-05-17 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi,

It has been asked on IRC if it is possible to automount devices on startup.
I could only advise manually editing the fstab. Having had a further dig,
pysadm does not bring any dependencies onto my system (I'm guessing they're
already there because of Pyneighborhood). As it is only going to use up a
little disk space and I would not think more resources to run than something
like Pyneighborood do you think it is an included candidate, or should it be
just noted that a user requiring such functionality can install it via
Synaptics.

Regards,

Phill.

it's a music PLAYER. NOT a BROWSER/ORGANISER with addition of player,
like amarok, exaile, songbird, itunes and other such. infact, it's
very, VERY similar to foobar on windows - so then it doesn't have any
bloating trash-features like some libaries and such IMO worthless
unnessesary stuff. And I hope it will be so for ever, now it is IMO
nearly perfect (it lacks only support for other playlists formats and

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Inclusion in 10.10 [Disk Mounting]

2010-05-17 Thread Phillip Whiteside
Hi Mike,

As I am not sure if it was a ntfs drive the OP wanted to automount, I'd have
still used pysadm as it can handle more than just ntfs, but I will endeavour
to remember that if someone just wants a quick 'automount my ntfs stuff'

Hi Leszek,

pysadm is still in the Ubuntu repos ;-) I was also thinking of the bit in
the project that reads *Lubuntu is targeted at normal PC users . Such
users may not know how to use command line tools* and trying to find a
nice, fairly simple, with good documented support (e.g.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=872197 ) way of doing it.

Regards,

Phill.

  Hi,

there is still disk-manager avaiable. (even though it isn't anymore on
ubuntu, but debian unstable still has it

It is working very good and can configure /etc/fstab interactively.

 Hi,

It has been asked on IRC if it is possible to automount devices on
startup. I could only advise manually editing the fstab. Having had a
further dig, pysadm does not bring any dependencies onto my system (I'm
guessing they're already there because of Pyneighborhood). As it is only
going to use up a little disk space and I would not think more resources to
run than something like Pyneighborood do you think it is an included
candidate, or should it be just noted that a user requiring such
functionality can install it via Synaptics.

  Regards,

  Phill.

  Hi!
I have installed ntfs-config. And after selecting auto-configure there
now I have all my ntfs-devices mounted automatically during the startup.
 Hope, it helps.

  Regards, Michael.
