[Lubuntu-desktop] lubuntu-desktop metapackage - Recommends vs Dependencies

2011-03-05 Thread Richard Foulkes
Hi Guys,

I've been following lubuntu for a while now, and i'm thinking of
switching to it for my netbook's distro. I'm also interested in using it
on low-end systems that i will donate to people.

There's one thing bugging me though. On ubuntu-desktop, i can remove
firefox, the openjdk (replace with Sun JDK), brasero etc, and the
ubuntu-desktop package stays installed, as these are only Recommends not
Dependencies. The idea here (correct me if i'm wrong?) seems to be that
core desktop functionality is separate from the bundled applications -
and users are free to swap these for alternatives.

The thing is, lubuntu-desktop seems to have ALL of it's dependencies
listed as 'Dependencies', not 'Recommends'. I want to remove xfburn
(useless on a netbook), swap openjdk / icedtea for 'sun' jdk, possibly
junk the card games, remove Chromium if i swap to Firefox (or
proprietary Chrome), and get rid of Gnome office if i go for Libre
Office (which my Netbook can handle ok).

But attempting to do any of this removes the lubuntu-desktop package.
The system still works, but this 'feels' wrong - i honestly don't know
whether the removal of the package would affect a distro upgrade.
Forcing the user to keep all these default applications also would seem
to go against the idea of lubuntu as 'lightweight', at least in terms of
disk space.

I'm not complaining about the package selections themselves, they do
seem sensible for low end machines, just about being forced to keep them
if my machine can handle alternatives that suit me better, or if i
wanted to remove them on a machine with a very small disk.

Could whoever builds lubuntu-desktop please list only the packages
required for the Desktop (X / lxde / gvfs etc?) as dependencies and set
the rest to recommends please?

I'm sorry if i'm reporting this in an inappropriate way - i'm not sure
whether it's a bug or feature request - or even how to report such a
thing on Launchpad. I do have a few more suggestions to make - based on
how i've been using lubuntu so far, but i'm not sure where to submit
these either - guessing Brainstorm isn't appropriate for lubuntu at this
time?

Anyway guys thanks for putting together a good distro - i just tried
Natty Alpha 3 and it's looking good :)

It is 100% safe to allow the lubuntu-desktop package to be removed from
your machine. It's only real function, like the other -desktop
packages, is to point to a set of packages and so make it simple to
install them all together, as a set.

But attempting to do any of this removes the lubuntu-desktop
package. The system still works, but this 'feels' wrong - i honestly
don't know whether the removal of the package would affect a distro

It should make no difference at all. It is just a meta-package. It has
no content.

Forcing the user to keep all these default applications also would
seem to go against the idea of lubuntu as 'lightweight', at least in
 terms of disk space.

No-one is forcing the user to keep anything around that they want to
remove, here. Tweak your package selection to your heart's content :)

I'm not complaining about the package selections themselves, they do
seem sensible for low end machines, just about being forced to keep
 them

Again, no-one is being forced to do that -- it is OK (safe) to allow
lubuntu-desktop itself to be uninstalled :)

Your suggestion is not necessarily bad, but (unless Julien feels
otherwise) I'm not sure we would want to make that change this far into
the Natty release cycle.

This list is a reasonable place to discuss ideas and suggestions for
Lubuntu at the moment. Actual bugs can (and should) be reported on
Launchpad, as usual.

Anyway guys thanks for putting together a good distro - i just tried
Natty Alpha 3 and it's looking good :)

Thanks for the feedback, and welcome to the Lubuntu community! Do
please help us by reporting any bugs or problems you find in the Alpha 3
release -- the more people test it, the better the next release can become.

Grin! If you can't boot from a CD, it is difficult to get to the menu
on the CD to use the test item there :) :)

You *can* manually check the md5sum of the ISO itself, since we provide
those both on the relevant Lubuntu Wiki page and as a
lubuntu-whatever.iso.md5 file which can be downloaded.

You can also check the md5sum of what you burned to a CD-R manually, but
you need the number of 2K blocks the .iso file takes up to do that, so
you need to do something like

  dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=2k count=$(($(stat --printf %s
lubuntu-natty-alpha3.iso)/2048)) 2/dev/null |md5sum

and compare the output with the md5 hash value in the
lubuntu-natty-alpha3.iso.md5 file.

The above is a decent test to do right after burning a CD. Once you are
past that stage, and assuming you have multiple PCs around, I think it
is probably easier (and may even be a better test of a CD) to just boot
the questionable CD in a different PC, and run the Test CD menu item
there, instead.

There is one difference, although it may well not matter to you.

If you upgrade to a newer version of Lubuntu and the lubuntu-desktop
package has changed (added to) the set of packages it points to, then
the upgrade will not pull in any such added packages unless you have
lubuntu-desktop present.

Since it appears that you are more interested in removing things than
adding them, this probably will not matter to you, but I thought I
should correct myself and mention it, just in case it does matter!

[Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 3 intitial test and some problems.

2011-03-05 Thread Yorvyk
Initial impression of the new Alpha 3 ISO.
As the drive was a corrupt FAT32 windows disk I let it install over the whole
disk. This it did with out any problems. Although, due to a dodgy BIOS, it
did attempt to name the machine
'steve-VT8363-Invalid-entry-length-0-DMI-table-is-broken-Stop' :)
As the machine has no ethernet port I didn't test the download updates option,
I'll do this later when I find a NIC.

In use I found LxRandR didn't save the screen settings between boots.
The Ubuntu font is not used everywhere. The title bars for instance are still
sans.

I'll carry on testing and see what else I can find/break :)

A nice simple easy to remember host name, that one :)

Do you know if these issues existed in Alpha 2? Regardless, if you are
reasonably sure that they are not unique to your PC (it doesn't sound
like they would be), please create Launchpad bug reports for each of them.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 3 Update Manager / Apt - defaults settings

2011-03-05 Thread Yorvyk
A few problems/observations found when running Update Manager.

Key not installed for Lubuntu-Desktop PPA
Restricted and Multiverse are enabled by default. Should they be?
Natty-security and natty-updates are not enabled by default, Should they be?
In Other Software:
The Lucid Partner repo is listed, not enabled though.
Security.ubuntu.com is listed. Shouldn't this be part of the default repos and
not Other, enabled by the settings under Updates.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Alpha 3 intitial test and some problems.

2011-03-05 Thread (Rafael Laguna)
Just a question. In Gnome you can specify fonts in themes. In fact, when
you choose one of those, Appearance-Properties asks you for changing
that (like the suggestion of a wallpaper).

  * The first thing I want to do is check about specifying fonts
with the murrine engine (so Ozone can use it globaly)
  * The second one is for PCMan: Could LXAppearance suggest that? I
know that this requieres the existence of theme packages (or
something like that) to change all with a single clic. What do
you think?

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Phill: your phillw.net email is bouncing!!

2011-03-05 Thread Phill Whiteside
hiyas jonathan,

Yes I am aware of it.

google once again managed to screw up my account, it will be down for at
least 5 days.
I've told Launchpad to use my primary reserve account at
phillw@vpolink.comand had my
phi...@ubuntu.com one also diverted over here.
To say I am not a happy bunny, would be the understatement of the millenium.

As it is totally broken, i've asked Derrick if he would invoke the
educational version onto it, as I am registered and have been approved
(I'm also a registered charity in USA).

With piglet being down, it's a pita to get passwords to set my DNS area up
to do auto diverts for myself and a couple of others.
Heck, it never rains, but it pours!

Regards,

Phill.

 Phill,

I hope you see this (got the email address from whois phillw.net).

Your email to phi...@ubuntu.com forwards to phi...@phillw.net and that
 bounces!

If you need help with this let me know. I looked around it the control
panel but did not see anything obviously odd, EXCEPT that the MXes for
phillw.net are pointed to google, not to the server hosting provider,
 which seems strange:

  jonathan@black:~/lubuntu$ dig phillw.net +short
  72.55.186.69
  jonathan@black:~/lubuntu$ dig phillw.net mx +short
  10 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM http://aspmx.l.google.com/.
  jonathan@black:~/lubuntu$ dig ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COMhttp://aspmx.l.google.com/.
 +short
  74.125.155.27

So your phillw.net email is not going towards your phillw.net server at
all. I'll see if I can fix that for you from the control panel.
