[Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu Oneiric Alpha 1

2011-06-02 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

A quick mail to announcement the availability of Lubuntu Oneiric Alpha
1. This ISO is just a snapshot of current development, there is no big
noticeable changes.

Current changes and know issues :
- Build with install recommends by default
- No langpack included
- Include apt-xapian-index, which should be removed later
- gnome-power-manager may crash
- GTK3 applications are ugly

This ISO is primary for developers which want to test the current result
of the ISO, and testing curent behavior with the GTK2/GTK3 mix, and the
switch to install recommends by default. You can also start testing
Oneiric in the VM by installing it with this ISO.

No need to heavily test the ISO, we are going to switch the build
system, and nothing really new is in (no updates of LXDE and related
packages).

[Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 697694] Re: Lubuntu installation crashes

2011-06-02 Thread kalehrl
Hello everyone

I encountered the same problem when installing lubuntu 11.04. I solved
it by erasing all partitions with gparted live cd and installing minimal
install .iso from usb drive.

All my subsequent experiences with lubuntu are axcellent.

Thank you for your work!

Title:
  Lubuntu installation crashes

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: ubiquity

I tried installing Lubuntu 10.10 but the installation crashed and it
said to report a bug with two files attached: partman, and syslog. The
thing is that I can only attach one file, how do I attach the other.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Pcmanfm-develop] Directory tree is now available in PCManFM!

2011-06-02 Thread Sergio Cipolla
I don't know what people think but maybe the change from Places←→Directory
tree could be put in the 'View' menu or in the preferences so as to leave
more space in the side panel?
I think the old pcmanfm had a button for that, right?

For me it isn't really needed to be quick to access that but for some people
may be, I don't know. But trying to leave as much space as possible in the
side pane is good.

2011-06-02 Thread Phill Whiteside
The attached image looks nice (Well, anything would be better than the 1st
email :P )

Nice work.

When you get the chance / time, could you have a chat with charlie-tca about
a theme for those with eye-sight problems? He has done extensive work on it
for xubuntu and has said he would be more than happy to assist.
charlie-...@ubuntu.com aka https://launchpad.net/~charlie-tca There is no
desperate rush, it is just a case of starting off the accessibility areas of
lubuntu wich will be a couple of cycles in the making.

Regards,

Phill.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Possible bug?

2011-06-02 Thread Jared Norris
Good morning all,

I've come across something very weird this morning that I've never seen
before. Trying to open any program via the gui menu or taskbar icons results
in them trying to open as root (I noticed because PCmanFM threw errors that
I didn't have permission to open the /home/user location). I'm logged in as
a normal user and whenever I open programs from the terminal prompt it
functions as expected.

Should I file a bug or does any one have any other suggestions?

This is only a fairly recent occurrence or I would have picked up on it I
would have thought. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to
troubleshoot this sort of issue? I would simply log out and then back in but
this is my main machine where I value my uptime so would prefer to leave
that until last ditch effort.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Permissions and who am i (was: Possible bug? )

Firstly, I think your description of the issue may be upside-down.

If the commands run from the GUI were being run as root, they would
more or less by definition be able to access any file owned by any user
anywhere on your machine (unless you have been doing some unusual things
with POSIX ACLs, or kernel capability bits, or both... which I rather
doubt!).

You asked for things to try to troubleshoot this further:

(1) In LXTerminal (assuming you can launch LXterminal OK), what does the
command

  id

output? It should tell you who LXterminal thinks you are. You can also try

  who am i

as another way to see who you are :)

(2) Next, check that your shell is clear about who you are, with

  echo $USER has a home at $HOME

and then check that the passwd file has you listed sanely, with

  grep $USER /etc/passwd

Then recheck the permissions on your home dir with

  ls -ld $HOME

You could also usefully check for files (or directories) in there which
are *not* owned by you, with

  find $HOME ! -user $USER -ls

which will output nothing at all on a 'normal' machine.

(3) Now, you need to find out who the various GUI components of LXDE are
running as, because it sounds to me as though they may be running as
someone else.

  ps aux |grep lx

should be a start on that.

(4) If you really want more homework after all that, just for fun, run
pcmanfm, but run it from the shell, not by pressing buttons anywhere
(hands off that mouse!) :

  pcmanfm

Now check whether it can see your files (in $HOME and elsewhere)
normally, and can work with them, and also check who it is now running
as, just as a you never know check:

  ps aux |grep pcmanfm

OK, that's enough things to try for one email :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Thoughts on valuing uptime (was: Re: Possible bug? )

(1) Logging in and out does not change uptime, rebooting changes uptime.

(2) Unless the machine is controlling an artificial heart, or something
similarly medically-oriented, *why* do you value your machine uptime?
