Subject: [Lubuntu-desktop] lubuntu development model - Seeds vs UCK

 Hello,

we had a talk among different people about a good model for building
the lubuntu distribution. A sustainable model suggested by some is the
Seed model practiced by the Xubuntu developers.

There are solutions like Ubuntu Customization Kid
 (http://uck.sourceforge.net´) and Reconstructor
(http://reconstructor.aperantis.com) out there. However, they have
some drawbacks and I am not sure how we can build a model to include
 different people in the process.

I see the seeds model as a viable way to make lubuntu sustainable.
There is a wiki page on the kubuntu wiki with more information:

Seeds are the lists of packages we want to include in the
distribution. The minimal, boot, standard, desktop, and either ship or
live seeds go onto our CDs. Xubuntu seeds, being built on top of
Ubuntu, inherit a shared set of seeds called the platform seeds.
These platform seeds are maintained by Ubuntu Core Developers whereas
the Xubuntu seeds are primarily taken care of by Xubuntu developers.
Xubuntu seeds (as with all Ubuntu flavors) manage their seeds using
the bazaar revision control system and host them on launchpad (build
scripts pull the official seeds to build the cd).

More information on Seed Management here
 https://wiki.kubuntu.org/SeedManagement.

What do you think about it?

 Best,

 Mario

I remember  the Ubuntu Koala Karmic had some display problem with Msi Wind.
 It was the backlight
that starts flickering.. I realize here was the same problem but it was only
for couple of seconds after the boot.

And in the Koala Karmic there was some problem too with  detecting devices
on usb... but here It didnt notice of it

About the Wicd, Its still a problem connecting WIFI,I still got that cannot
obtain IP adress in WEP mode.

I plugged my modem Huawei E220 in my netbook. And it was detected. But I
 dont know no anymore
how to use vwdial but It would be nice there is some thing to use it to
 connect my 3G modem

Bluetooth I switched on but no sign of blue in the corner... So I have to
install to progam... any suggestion please...

Further as netbook user I am very satified with the this Alpha stage 2.
Normally I really relay WIFI,my modem 3G and bluetooth. If hope these 3
things can be fixed or can be more improved. There are 3 files attached with
technical info's.I hope it will be enough to get Lubuntu better

 keep up the good work

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Default Browser

2010-02-02 Thread Glen Bizeau
I think this is one of those time when we are all going to agree to disagree...

Julien, if we go with Midori, can we put a script or shortcut on the
desktop that will install FF?

Personally I think this would fit the bill, have a lite browser, but
give users who don't know very much a simple way to
install FF. I am thinking about the illiterate here, bot people like
us who know what we are doing.

I'm fine with Midori since it seems to do everything FF does, but I
suspect if we have some way to track it, I think you
would see a lot of FF installs after the fact.

I know that trick, I have the User Agent Switcher plugin on FF for problems

 this.

I have found a couple of problems sites with Midori but they appear to be
known and can be overcome. Sites that claim the browser is unsupported
tend to work OK, a few sites told me FF 3.0, 3.5 3.6 was unsupported.
Online banking sites are another matter, obviously I can only test mine,
which refuses to cooperate with Midori, Opera and FF 3.5 3.6.  I am not
sure if this will be a major problem, would the target group for this
 distro use online banking.
The thing is, just how critical are these two.

 Hi,

I just created a new testing ISO. This is not an Alpha, but just a
snapshot of the current work to be able to test more the new features.
Like others Alpha, you should be aware that it's not considered stable,
see warnings for Lucid Alpha :

Pre-releases of Lucid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage.  They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Changes seen the Alpha 2 :
 * Main changes in the seed :
  - chromium for the browser
  - gnome-mplayer for the videos
  - network-manager for the network
 * New artwork made by Rafael Laguna. It's not the final theme, but it's
quite complete, so we can test with a non standard artwork. And I like
 it :)
 * A new session (Lubuntu-Netbook), which launched lxlauncher. You need
to logout, select Lubuntu-Netbook session instead of Lubuntu, and enter
 login ubuntu without password.

 Known bugs:
 * pcmanfm2 is not the default filemanager yet, it need more integration
to be usable. It is still available by using pcmanfm2
 * If you test on a USB, the first screen will freeze for a moment when
you click on Try Lubuntu Just wait, it will continue as normal.
 * Bug reported during testing :
