I subscribed to that bug and added an offer to provide testing. While Wubi is not as stable as an actual installation it can be quite useful, particularly since many Win 7 OEM's now use 4 primary partitions. IMHO it's definitely worth pursuing. I honestly don't see a huge problem. I find the documentation to be adequate. Of course in some instances the official Ubuntu documentation works for both Ubuntu and Lubuntu, other times not so much. I think it's also fair to say that we must still rely on LXDE's own documentation for many things, and let's not forget that we're very young as a legitimate child of Ubuntu/Canonical ;^) I suspect we'll garner more support from the Canonical devs as time goes along but some patience is needed. I know everyone is doing their best :^) I'd personally defer to Phill W on this, if he's available. He helped bring us to the point of acceptance into the Canonical family and his voice means a lot to me. I just wanted to drop a brief comment about this statement: Please don't make extra work for our scarce and overworked developers :) I've honestly wondered about that for some time now. While I'm no dev by any stretch of the imagination I have been involved in Ubuntu iso-testing for well over 3 years, and recently the number of suggestions regarding Lubuntu here at the mailing list have been almost overwhelming. How much time has this taken away from fixing actual bugs or implementing meaningful change? While it's great to have someone new and energetic join the team it's also important for the new members to give the actual devs time to deal with the basic tasks of maintaining the project ;^) I hope that doesn't sound too harsh. My initial thoughts: #1: When booting the live CD, just after selecting language, select Check disc for defects. It takes several minutes to complete. If that shows no defects found move to step #2: #2: When rebooting the live CD select language and with Try Lubuntu w/o installing highlighted press F6 which will display several optional boot parameters. From there select nomodeset using the arrow keys, press enter to apply (you'll know it's applied by an x next to it), then press Esc. Now the nomodeset boot option will be applied when you boot. That's sometimes helpful troubleshooting graphics card compatibility issues with the Xserver. I've never tried sudo start lxdm, but rather sudo service lxdm start. I've actually meant to ask about the difference (if any) but I just never got around to it :^/ I just thought trying the nomodeset option would at least rule out one thing, since it helped advance things a bit I now wonder what issues the X11 updates I've seen since release might actually apply to. I'm toying with that borked power-manager icon thing ATM, but I'll try to parse those X11 updates to see if they might address any bugs similar to this with Radeon graphics. [Lubuntu-desktop] Current status of alternate installer
I went ahead and tested both the 20110910 and 20110911 i386 alternate install images to see if I could reproduce that broken software sources UI that I'd mentioned previously, but I couldn't get that far. I encountered the installer cannot find a suitable kernel package to install and being unsure how to install the kernel post-install I just aborted the installation. I did report a new bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/847772 I hope I did OK there, and that I'm not coming across as pushy :^) Just looking at the calendar and realizing that we have 10 days until Beta 2, and probably one week before the next round of iso-testing, I thought it wise to do a little follow up now. Please consider this largely thinking out loud on my part. I'm only an iso-tester with no ties to the actual development end of things, but I did a bit of studying that I hope may be helpful regarding this. I pulled up the Ubuntu and Lubuntu live-i386 Beta 1 iso-tracker pages: http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/test/6450 http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/test/6386 You'll see that OEM testing was listed under the Ubuntu image but not the Lubuntu image. (OT but the same was true of Wubi installs). So I suspect that Ubuntu development just isn't there yet with Lubuntu, but that's just a guess. Ultimately I think two things are required here: 1) File a bug from the fresh OEM install if possible by opening lxterminal and running 'ubuntu-bug ubiquity' which will allow apport to collect info, then give the bug a title and I'd think the same explanation you provided here would be sufficient as a description. 2) Maybe Phill or Julien could correspond with Colin Watson (or another installer team member) via IRC channel #ubuntu-installer regarding the status of OEM installs with Lubuntu live images. Regarding the live-installer/ubiquity requiring 2X disc space I'm not sure what you mean, but I notice the actual installed size of / after a live install is somewhere between 2.1GB and 2.2GB, but the installed size after using the alternate (d-i) installer is about 1.9GB. I've dug around a bit and I can't really see anything that's lacking in the alternate installation, but that seems odd to me. I plan on testing an Ubuntu live install vs an Ubuntu alternate install soon to see if the same applies. Regarding swap Colin Watson responded to me recently here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-auto/+bug/782507/comments/7 So work is ongoing :^) Aside from that using the alternate CD should not be scary to anyone, although I do realize that the cost of an additional CD can be prohibitive to some users, and anything new is always intimating. If we do go for the hand-holding alt instructions, I'd like to also make /home a partition as well. IMHO this would allow the / system to be as small as possible, allow us to factor in depending on RAM the /swap area and then have all the user data on its own partition. For such small disks we are not going to be installing side by side with another system. Well, those are my thoughts. I look forward to the replies, The battle may have been lost for 11.10, but the war for 12.04 is yet to start. If 12.04 can address the ubiquity issues that affect Lubuntu (and any other low-footprint) then we get a win-win. So I started the automated install (install alongside) where my blank 4GB flash drive was the only unpartitioned space available, and I have 2GB of RAM, so the installation stalls with the attached warning because it wants to create about 2GB of swap which leaves an insufficient amount of disc space for /. IMHO that's actually OK though, because you're told that clicking on continue will result in failure, and if you click on back you end up in the manual partitioning screen. Lubuntu now also has an alternate install image so I'd think we're OK here. I think this has been mentioned before but both of those panel icons are still just a box containing a do-not-enter symbol. Are there existing bug reports? I'm not even sure if these should be filed against lxpanel or what. While mentioning lxpanel, and waiting for a test install to complete, I might as well bring up a couple of wish-list items: Gosh, it would be nice to be able to adjust the font of the clock :^) And I never have figured out how to get the temp monitor to work. CPU temp is a real good indicator of how hard things are having to work. Other than that I think we have a real winner! I like the grey panel background. My eyesight stinks and after adjusting a few basic things the clock is the only thing I can't really read. To all, thanks for everything you do. That's definitely bad news for me :^( I currently still maintain 24 machines with P4M800 integrated chips and, if I'm reading that right, I'm about to need some major hardware upgrades. I also maintain a few machines with older Intel 8xx chips. Most of the machines with VIA chips are ones I upgraded myself for seniors to bring them out of the Win 98 and ME stone-age. [Lubuntu-desktop] When might lubuntu daily images be available again?
I don't know what else I can add to the title. No daily images have been available for several days. I particularly want to be able to test some of the ubiquity changes with Lubuntu rather than Ubuntu but so far that's not possible. Also quite a few sites now say that dailies are available but when you search nothing is available. Just wondering. Thanks in advance. We're OK ;^) One person went on a rant without spending a little time to explore. They were basically comparing our Alpha 3 to a final release w/o even having read the release notes.. I think the i386 is pretty good other than a few cosmetic blemishes, can't comment on the 64bit version because I lack 64bit hardware but I saw a lot of bugs reported. Hopefully in about another week I'll be able to monitor the forums a bit closer, but not all of those threads should have been merged. The first thing I notice is that there is no Install icon on the desktop or in the menu to allow installation from the Live Desktop. You can of course reboot and begin the installation process from the boot menu. I just happened to look though and I see that I have an original Lubuntu 10.04 Live CD so let me do a quick comparison. I'll still go ahead and run through three installation scenarios (an entire disc install, followed by an auto-resize install, and finally a manual partitioning install) just to be certain no cats are eaten ;^) I also failed at running a persistent session with the Live CD using a casper-rw partition but I need to repeat that test to be certain what went wrong ... there's always a possibility that I goofed. ATM I don't have a spare flash drive to create a Live USB, but when I was iso-testing the Ubuntu 10.04.3 images I found that bug #645818 still existed so it's difficult to create a Lucid Live USB with some newer versions of usb-creator. Also I may be unavailable for a few hours. I've been trying to get most of my physical work done early here before the heat sets in. I just booted that original Lubuntu 10.04 CD and Install Lubuntu is on the desktop, whereas on the new 10.04.3 CD the only desktop icon present is My Documents which appears to open Home. One other minor thing, well a difference between the two, the F6 option on the 10.04 CD says Other options as seems normal, but the 10.04.3 CD says Password, although pressing F6 displays the expected options. I'll run a few more tests ASAP. Oh, as far as I tell pcmanfm and all of the lxde apps seem to work well. Although I'm still quite new to Lubuntu so I could easily overlook something, but mounting filesystems (including a data flash drive) and browsing through system files seems to work quite well. I'm very impressed with the simplicity and functionality of pcmanfm, IMHO it's a true work of art, very intuitive. Regarding the lack of an install icon: I booted the Live CD this time choosing to Install but it still booted to the Live Desktop. As I browsed about in pcmanfm I found the Lubuntu image and once opened it shows an install icon. OK, booted again and tried clicking on that install folder icon but it was a no go. I browsed about a bit in there but I'm stumped :^( I haven't yet tried repeating that persistence test but I'll wait until I hear from you. Note: I expect there to be official iso-testing of Ubuntu 11.10 Alpha3 images very soon, probably within 24 to 48 hours, so that will be a priority for me. Although as soon as Lubuntu is added to the QA-tracker I'll change my subscription from testing Ubuntu images to testing Lubuntu images ;^) My guess is that most people wanting Lubuntu will want the latest and greatest anyway, and with 12.04 being the next LTS we could then decide what to do about LTS point releases. For example only Ubuntu and Kubuntu produced a 10.04.3, Xubuntu did not, so there appears to be some leeway regarding that. It was recently mentioned at the forums to possibly use the lubuntu-dev/staging ppa for bug testing. I've been using the lubuntu-dev/lubuntu-daily ppa for quite some time and I wonder if it's safe to mix the two ppa's? I might just add that I've encountered only a few minor problems: 1) I can't for the life of me get the hardware temp monitor to work in lxpanel. 2) I wish I could increase the font size of the clock in lxpanel (poor eyesight). 3) Double (or triple) icon in the panel showing that my network is broken, although it's not. 4) When installing only lubuntu-core in an existing Ubuntu installation the package galculator is installed, and I wonder why that's a dependency of lubuntu-core rather than just lubuntu-desktop. Note: I personally much prefer a clean install of Lubuntu anyway, but I anticipate others may want to at least try that approach. Of course all of the above are very minor, insignificant things and I'm really impressed with Lubuntu in general. I've not been able to play at the desk much in the past few weeks. but the top of my list is: 1) Integrate with iso-testing so I can test Lubuntu rather than Ubuntu. (Although I'll still cross-test for certain bugs.) 2) I think you know what will work best with the documentation. I stumbled a bit at first but after corresponding briefly with you at the Ubuntu forums it all became clear. 3) Bug reporting info is good but may need some refining. I'm personally quite pleased with Lubuntu, both Natty and Oneiric. As a complete noob to Lubuntu (moving from Ubuntu/Gnome) I wonder if it would be possible to test this via a PPA before committing to a change for Oneiric. Take note; I'm only an iso-tester so I'm clueless about the complexity involved, but I find pcmanfm quite easy to adapt to (basically just simple and intuitive) so I'm reluctant to see the devs make any changes that could possibly have a negative effect ;^) I just want to see Lubuntu remain as stable as it is while confronting it's current challenges: 1) Becoming a full fledged member of the Ubuntu family. 2) IMHO maintaining a very feasible fall-back for those turned off by gnome3, gnome-shell, and/or unity :^) 3) Implementing the change to GTK+ 3. Thanks for responding Julien. I hadn't seen the release announcement (didn't know there was one) because I subscribed to the mailing list after that. I have now however found it in the archives, and I posted the text at the forums to hopefully prevent a flood of questions or bug reports. Regarding the lacking restart or shutdown buttons I posted a screenshot here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/casper/+bug/792850 Note that I could only start the DE by typing startx. I'm not sure I know how to restart lxdm. I tried sudo service lxdm start and that failed, but I'm used to Gnome so I will have a learning curve to tackle with Lubuntu ;^) Regardless don't worry much about these particular bugs. I was just trying to prepare for changing the lion's share of my iso-testing to Lubuntu once it's added to the list. I should be able to repeat tests to see if bugs exist in both Ubuntu and Lubuntu. Regarding my original point, when I look here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs I still wonder if the package 'lubuntu-desktop' shouldn't be included as an option so people can file a bug against Lubuntu when they're otherwise unsure what specific package is involved? Indeed, you're right. Using sudo /etc/init.d/lxdm restart does complete the live CD boot process and lands me in a true Lubuntu DE instead of that LXDE. And the buttons are there in the Lubuntu DE so it's all somehow related to the Live CD not completing the boot process on it's own. No worries. Since you have a whole new build process in the works I look forward to helping you test. I may have done a bit of a bad job explaining myself. I'm not too concerned ATM about the bugs I encountered, I'm just testing the waters in order to be as useful to the Lubuntu project as possible. The forum thing was actually an afterthought, and perhaps a poor one. My original intention was to explore the proper manner of filing bugs against Lubuntu when it's known that the same bugs don't exist in Ubuntu or another variant. In this case the actual apps effected were probably casper and ubiquity, but I knew the same issues weren't present in Ubuntu. I'm quite glad to see that Lubuntu will soon become an official member of the Ubuntu family. I particularly look forward to the day that Lubuntu's images are included in Ubuntu's iso-testing. Of course none of these are serious or unexpected this early in a dev cycle, but I wanted to get my feet wet checking out bug filing against Lubuntu anyway, and I'm a bit puzzled. I'm used to iso-testing pure Ubuntu so all of the above bugs would be filed against 'casper' but I know these bugs were not present when I tested Ubuntu so I thought I should possibly file them against the meta-package 'lubuntu-desktop' but that's a no-go. I'm just wondering if the meta-package 'lubuntu-desktop' should be added to launchpad as a bug filing option? I'm very impressed with the Lubuntu project and I hope my iso-testing skills may be helpful at some point, but I have no development skills. I'm just a tester.
