Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] ntp too chatty
Thanks, I stand by by my crazy qualifier. I used etherape to look at the activity. I've done that a lot for years and have never seen anything like he ntp activiy I saw. I have uninstalled ntp and now do $ sudo ntpdate 0.us.pool.ntp.org once in a while. (3) Are you using the same ntp.conf file on the two machines you are comparing? (4) Is there anything else different about the two machines that could be relevant? (5) Is either of them a virtual machine running on top of some other OS? Of course I want it checked but I want to control what sites and only at boot time and at reasonable intervals. The first is controlled in ntp.conf, the second (intervals) grow as the clock stabilizes, and has done so for some years. The ntp activity is unlike anything I've ever seen and I've looked at it in previous editions and I'd classify it as crazy now. If you can see very different behaviour in 11.04 from other machines with the *exact* same ntp.conf file, then I'd suggest opening a bug in Launchpad, and providing sufficient detailed information that others can duplicate this behaviour. That would include: (A) the specific version of ntp you are running, (B) your ntp.conf file, (C) sample output of /usr/sbin/ntpq -p after the machine has been running ntpd for a few hours, (D) /var/log/syslog (or equivalent) lines containing the string ntpd, and probably also (E) a wireshark or tcpdump packet capture file of all the crazy NTP traffic you are seeing. Without this kind of specific and clear information, no-one but you can possibly know how crazy the behaviour you are seeing is, and no-one can even attempt to duplicate it, to help you further! As far as I can see from systems around here, the initial ntpd peer poll frequency is still 64 seconds, as it has been for years now, and the backoff down to 1024 second polling seems to me, very unscientifically I realize (!), to be about the same as it always has been. I tried going into ntp.conf and commented out these two lines- it seemed like it would help from the description above them I'd suggest reading the relevant man page, by doing man ntp.conf and fully understanding the ntp.conf file, before suggesting that ntpd behaviour is crazy. My understanding is that restrict determines which machines *can* interact with your NTP server and *how* they can interact with it. It does not change the frequency your server polls its peers, as far as I know. I don't think it ever has. [Lubuntu-desktop] Launcher/icon stays highlighted (in focus?) after the associated app opens
Hi, Lubuntu has this action that I don't see in other flavors. If desktop icons/launcher is clicked to open it - the launcher/icon stays highlighted (in focus?) after the associated app opens. This has caused unwanted multiple windows to open and many things to be deleted I don't want deleted. I think focus on the icon should be released after the window opens. [Lubuntu-desktop] (no subject)
Hi, Using Lubuntu 10.10. When I close my Laptop (pull the screen/lid down to close it) it goes into a standby mode where I must press my now blinking on/off button to restart it. I want to have it so my laptop stays on. The screen by default will probably turn off (that seems hardwired into the hardware) but other than that I want control over this. Most flavors of Unbuntu easily have control over this by GUI menus but I don't see any way in Lubuntu. Is there a way? With a Synaptics touchpad. Moving the finger along the right edge of the touchpad acts as a scroll wheel. If the cursor is not in any app window but is in open desktop area - then this scrolling action will transport one to a different desktop. I have two desktops enabled so by moving the the finger along the side up/down I go from Desktop1 to Desktop2 and back. This deadly for me and causing much hair pulling. I am in the middle of doing something and desktop will change. No matter how careful I am this eventually happens. So for the sake of sanity I have only one desktop. I'd like multiple desktops but I need to turn-off this scrolling feature. I've seen some hacks in config files but they either don't work or have side effects. I want to keep the scrolling in windows were the touchpad scrolling really helps. I just want to turn-off the scrolling between desktops only. I can't find a GUI in Lubuntu to do this. Is there a way that works that anyone knows? When I double click on a text file (txt extension) nothing happens. I do that with a .doc and Abiword opens the file. I think there's no program associated with the txt extension. I'd like Gedit to open the file and be default program. How do I do this? Related maybe - Say there's a text file on the web with a link to download it. If I click the link the default program to open is Virus Scanner(?). I choose and find the path to Gedit the Always use this to open this kind of file checkbox is checked and grayed out. Gedit opens the file but the preference does not stick. All distros I've tried always see it and list it in Grub or Lilo, but Lubuntu 10.10 installed from the iso didn't. I fixed it so no problem now. But someone who didn't do the homework on how to manually edit Grub would be freaking out - where did my windows go maybe. When I right click and add an app to the desktop as a launcher there was a problem. Say I add Seamonkey as a launcher. I click the launcher icon and the terminal and seamonkey will open. This happened a lot - I'd add a launcher and click the icon and the terminal or leafpad or the file manager would open a window in addition to the app the launcher was made for. So I don't use desktop launcher though I'd like to... Other than that it's fast, clean, and stable and my favorite distro easily. [Lubuntu-desktop] How do I make a launcher?
Hi, User question, Are there clear easy to follow instructions on how to make desktop launchers in lubuntu? It should be easy but I could not do it even after Googling it. Yes I can right click an existing app in the menu. But let's say I upgrade to a new version before the repository has it and manually install it. Then how do I make a launcher? Right now I just start things from the terminal but would prefer a clickable icon. How do I make a launcher?
