Claws Mail (http://www.claws-mail.org/ formerly Sylpheed-Claws)

Sylpheed, and is now an entity in its own right, mainly due to
different goals and the fact that syncing both codebases doesn't happen
anymore.

Claws Mail has many extra features compared to Sylpheed and is more
powerful, yet is just as fast, lightweight and stable.

Justification:

Similar resource usage as Slypheed
Extendable with a number of 1st and 3rd party plugins available now
(Slypheed is also begining to develop support for plugins but Claws has
mature support with plugins available now!)
Plugins available with support for Calendar functions and syncing with
webcal servers like google calendar (May be able to provide
functionality that could allow removal of Osmo)

 Announcing the arrival of lubuntu-natty-alpha-20110228-i386.iso

This is a very unofficial first attempt at publishing an Lubuntu ISO
created in a fully automated way.

It is, if anything, even more alpha than alpha2, because it was
created by jmarsden and not by gilir. Use it at your own risk!

On the plus side, it is more up to date than alpha2, and so includes
gucharmap for those who want it, and a few other recent bugfixes and
 updates.

Issues with this ISO that are not also issues in alpha2 are likely to
be Jonathan's responsibility -- please do not bug Julien about them!

The remarkable thing about this ISO is that it exists and at least
somewhat works, *not* that it is bug-free or perfect or anything even
 close!

Please only download it if you will test it. When it finishes
uploading, it should become available at:

   http://phillw.net/lubuntu-natty-alpha-20110228-i386.iso

Please report all issues/bug/ideas related to using it to its creator,
jmarsden, on irc.freenode.net in #lubuntu (or #lubuntu-offtopic if
that is where you find him). Email to the mailing list at
lubuntu-desktop@lists.launchpad.net is also fine, but please be very
sure to mention in your email that you are using the
 lubuntu-natty-alpha-20110228-i386.iso created by jmarsden.

Please do not file bugs in Launchpad for issues that are only seen in
this ISO. This is not an official Lubuntu release :)

It is planned to create and publish Lubuntu ISOs like this weekly from
now until the final 11.04 release, so everyone can test with a recent
 codebase.

 Thanks,

 Jonathan Marsden

 KNOWN ISSUES:

  * A build including all language-pack-gnome-* packages resulted in an
833 MByte ISO, so this one only has the de,en,es,fr,nl ones.
Whether Lubuntu needs the language-pack-gnome-* packages needs
discussing with Julien.

  * On some people's machines, this ISO does not boot in virtualbox.
Why, and why it is inconsistent across different machines, needs
further work to discover.

When I introduce Lubuntu to people in my country, I'm sure the most

try something new, to try Linux and the most important thing they want
to know is their jobs in Windows would be able to be done in

There are many applications in Ubuntu repository that I could suggest

are lightweight and suitable for Lubuntu, for their computers or not.

Do we have any tip to choose the right applications for Lubuntu?

 pcmanfm[2357]: segfault at 1 ip 00dea1a8 sp bfd4188c error 4
 in libc-2.12.so[d76000+157000]
Did you have such situation?

Is it possible to generate a backtrace using :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs#Manual Backtrace
Also, could you add the version of libfm and pcmanfm ?

Thanks.

Julien Lavergne

There is a new version of kernel, but nothing changed

Please disregard this post.. it appears to *not* be specific to
Lubuntu. Many of the alpha testers are having problems with 35-7
regardless of their flavor of 'buntu. Oddly, I had no problems until
35-8, but now 35-7 is acting up as well. The joys of pre-beta. :-)

Anybody else having problems with the latest kernel update? It's
working fine for Ubuntu, but Lubuntu hangs just before one would
expect X to start up and the login screen to appear.

Doing Ctrl-Alt-F2 will get a console, but it only stays around for a
few seconds and then we're returned to the hung screen. Repeatedly
returning to the F2 console let's me continue typing where I left off,
so it's possible to eventually log in and issue a sudo reboot to get
out.

I'm running the 35-7 kernel now to type this.

I have the nvidia-current driver, which may or may not be relevant.

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] 2.6.35-8 kernel won't start X?

2010-07-20 Thread Michał Ćwikliński
I found the bug - it's the problem is with the drivers for the x1200
series cards. I have one in my laptop, and the newest kernel (2.6.35-9)
does not fix this issue

W dniu 19.07.2010 20:45, Bob Trevithick pisze:

How odd. I was just celebrating the fact that the new 35-9 kernel had
*solved* the problem for me. To boot Maverick Ubuntu (gnome), I have
to edit my grub menu, but to boot Maverick Lubuntu I now need to do
nothing special. If I can provide any specific details that might
help, please let me know. -Bob

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] LXAdmin, a collection of little applications to manage settings on LXDE

2010-07-19 Thread Michał Ćwikliński

 Hey.

When this scripts will be available for maverick??

W dniu 27.06.2010 11:23, Julien Lavergne pisze:

Hi,

Based on the Sidux applications, and 1 other from Lubuntu community,
LXAdmin is a collection of little python applications to manage some
settings and some tasks on LXDE. Basically, I gathered them in 1 place,
added autotools support and gettext support, and some basic support for
different distributions. There is still no big modification between them
and original applications.

You can find it in the git tree :
http://github.com/gilir/LXAdmin
It's mirrored on Launchpad : https://launchpad.net/lxadmin
Packages for Ubuntu available in the PPA :
https://launchpad.net/~lxadmin-team/+archive/testing

It's still quite focus on Debian/Ubuntu, but I'm sure it can be extended
to other distributions.

It also needs improvements, like when it needs root rights. But, it's
already useful in some cases.

It's developed with git, so it's possible to host it on lxde git if you
want :)

I would like also to begin an experiment with it : activate Launchpad
translation support, and see if it's bring more contributors. I would
like to see if it's interesting of not to use Launchpad for this.

Regards,
Julien Lavergne

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Changing PDF viewer by default

2010-06-20 Thread Michał Ćwikliński

Julien Lavergne gi...@ubuntu.com napisał(a):

 Hi,

Maybe you already noticed it, but epdfviewer (the default pdf viewer)
have a huge memory leak. See
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/epdfview/+bug/570410

It makes it quite unusable, and I don't know if it will be fixed in
 the futur.

I propose to change it. I don't know many alternatives, except evince
and xpdf. Evince use a bit more memory, but xpdf don't have a good UI,
and use a lot of CPU on my testing system. So, for now I'll prefer to
 use evince.

Any other ideas, and any feedbacks/comments are welcome :) It's open
 to discussion.

 Julien Lavergne
