Hi!

I proposed to include guvcview near month ago. I have already tested it on
my asus m51tr, asus eee pc 1015 pn and hp 2133. It is working fine. No
problems at all.

Best regards,

 Hi,

With the removal of cheese, we have nothing to test a webcam, especially
 on the live-cd.
Someone proposed to include guvcview. It seems to be a good choice :
quite simple and not too much dependencies.

Did someone already test it ? I don't have a webcam, I'll be glad if
someone have feedbacks about it :)

 Thanks.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Audio players

2011-02-26 Thread Mike Nokel
Hi!

I have just tested some audio players in my Lubuntu Maverick and I want to
share my experience with you. First of all, my testing machine was Asus EEE
PC 1015 pn. It has Atom N550 inside and 2 GB of memory.
Firstly, I have installed deadbeef. I don't know whether it is a bug or not
but after playing from one to three songs it stops playing at all. So this
player was removed.
Then I have read about audacious in this mail's list. I have installed it
and it looked very nice, but used ~28% of my CPU. This was too big for me,
so this player was also removed.
Then I have found decibel audio player. This one used ~18% of my CPU and had
very simple, but nice interface.
I have also tried pogo audio player. It used ~16% of my CPU.
So, now about two winners in this small compettion in my opinion. First of
them is pragha. It is very fast, has simple but nice interface, is coded in
C++ and uses ~14% of my CPU. And the second is alsaplayer. It has nice
interface, equalizer and some available plugins that can imitate winamp
style. It uses ~12% of my CPU. So I think that this is the best one for me.

P.S. All of these players use nearly the same amount of memory.
P.P.S. All digits were taken from htop utility.

Best regards,
Mike Nokel

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] drop box

2010-12-25 Thread Mike Nokel
Hi all!

I have been using dropbox for a long time with LXDE, there is no problems at
all. Go to http://wiki.dropbox.com/TipsAndTricks/TextBasedLinuxInstall.
There are instructions to run dropbox as CLI script. So 3 steps:
1) download x86 vesrion
2) unpack it and move to your ~ directory
3) create in .config/autostart/ some file, for example dropbox.desktop and
place there:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Application
Exec=.dropbox-dist/dropboxd

save it and here you are.

On every start of your system you will get dropbox autostarted. Place
something in your selected on the first run Dropbox folder and it will be
automatically synchronized.

Best wishes.

 Hiyas developers,

firstly I hope you have had a restful Christmas. This is only on the 'wish
 list', but is it possible?

(21:11:01) ChrisDruif: Is there a way for dropbox to work with lubuntu?
Those other programs should work on LXDE...however, dropbox only works with
nautilus...and through a script on thunar

 Hiyas Lubunteers,

Thanks, and my kindest regards to you and your families over the festive
period. I look forward to the New Year and watching Lubuntu evolve and
finally get its rightful place as a fully adopted member of the ubuntu
family. My warmest regards and thanks to every Lubuntuteer and those from
other teams that are kind enough to help out as I 'kidnap' our lubunteers to
help other other teams. Being a part of the family is what matters.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Replacing Aqualung with Exaile [DISCUSSION]

2010-05-15 Thread Mike Nokel
2010/5/15 PCMan pcman...@gmail.com

I encourage every Lubuntu and LXDE users to try DeadBeef, an almost
perfect lightweight yet feature-rich music player.
The author provided deb packages already. The latest release is quite
 awesome.
 http://deadbeef.sourceforge.net/
The UI is very similar to that of LXMusic, but it's much more functional.
Please try it and share your opinions.
This is my favorite so far.

rhythmbox has bizzare interface that you have to learn how to use, but
it is possible to do that (unlike with exaile, wich seems very similar

it suprises you with its options and features hidden so much that you
can't configure it at all and in the end it unusable and impossible to

powerfullness, like foobar on windows, with wich you have to really
try to mess something up to have it not working.
  so I'd stick to aqualung.

  Hello,

I am sending this mail because of the advise Julien Lavergne gave me in
our big ¨Lubuntu application discussion for maverick¨ discussion. :P

This mail is about discussing Aqualung replacing with Exaile.
Exaile is a bit like a lightweight rhythmbox, it loads quickly and
supports a lot of music files. Through Synaptic you can even install a
plugin for Ipod support, and you can also install a plugin for pidgin so
pidgin can display the music song you are listening with Exaile.
Exaile uses about 18,8 mb of memory on idle, and Aqualung uses 9.9 mb of
memory on idle (LXmusic 2.7 mb :P )
Exaile has many advantages, it is not gray and not odd looking like
Aqualung (which looks weird in every Desktop Enviroment) less
dependencies, more support because of a bigger project. (e.g Exaile has
a good launchpad page with bug reporting and translating all open to
everyone, Aqualung hasn´t got a launchpad page.)
Is the 9 mb difference in memory consumption acceptable in Lubuntu? Or a
slightly different question, is it worth the sacrifice? (Atleast I think
it definetly is, but what about you guys?)

Version 0.3 works fine with Lucid distributives, it is very usefull for

By the way, also I use gxneur - automatic layout switcher, analog for punto
 switcher in MS
Windows. It is also convient and customizable tool.

 Best regards, Yaroslav.

So, I have tried livecd. There is huge improvement since last alpha. Thank

1) when I launch screensaver (from parameters) I see again annoying error
telling me that there is no directory /usr/share/backgrounds. May be create
this directory by default?
2) I have noticed one way to crash pcmanfm2. I have gone to Go-Network
and after it showed me my network, I have pressed it. And pcmanfm2 crashes.
3) Also there is no terminal emulator by default (that is specified in
preferences). May be it should be?
4) When I marked to show WM menu (going to parameters of my desktop) it was
very difficult for me to return to parameters of my desktop. After few
minutes of trying to find the solution, I go to terminal and type pcmanfm2
--desktop-pref and it appears. May be this window should be able to appear
under Desktop Settings in WM menu?

In the near future as soon as I find some free time I will do fresh install
on my computer and tell you about my experiences.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf and edit it: change Option ActiveDevice to LCD,CRT

It is not a bug of Lubuntu. Currently, it is a bug of Lucid and will be

 Hi.

I have found some time to install it on my computer. In general, everything
looks and works perfectly. However, there are some problems:
1) by default, there is no keyboard layout controller on the panel. I think,
that it should be there. A lot of people uses it in everyday's life.
2) as for battery monitor on the panel: it should be visible by default.
This empty space looks really strange.
3) there is still pcmanfm 0.5.2, not pcmanfm2(
4) you have included osmo as a default program. My friends and me haven't
heard about this program before. And in everyday life may be it is not so
necessary to be included, I think.
5) without installing packages xscreensaver-gl, xscreensaver-gl-extra,
xscreensaver-data-extra I see a lot of error messages telling me that
there is no directory /usr/share/backgrounds. It is annoying.
6) when I launch lxterminal, appeared the window without any string like
this: ubu...@ubuntu:~/. But when you hit any key on the keyboard it
appears unexpectably.
7) some buttons such as OK, Cancel just don't work (only hitting Close
Window helped me to close the windows). It is so when you are configuring
panel for example.
8) you have used LXDM as a login manager. It is perfect, but it has serious
problems:
 - when I enable autologin on it, I just can't switch my keyboard layout
by hitting on the applet on the panel. Only typing sudo lxpanelctl restart
helped me.
 - there is no gui-program to configure LXDM yet. For a lot of people it
will be hard to understand what do if they want enable autologin or so on.
 - using LXDM I can't modify PATH variable (even modifying file
/etc/profile), so I can't play any games using menu (Menu-Games-...). It
won't work.
9) sound card by default doesn't work. So, I have gone to alsa-project.org,
downloaded the latest driver, lib and utils, installed it. Run sudo
alsaconf and after reboot I heart the sound.
10) I've got ati radeon 4670 video, but when I tried to install
xorg-driver-fglrx, it tells me that he wants to remove xorg with all its
dependencies. Strange behaviour. So, I have only poor 3D now(
11) I've tried to install fskbsetting. But when launching it gives me
segmentation fault. I don't know why.
12) May be there should be some games, at least some gnome-games?

So, this is my first experience.

Regards,
Michael.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] New testing ISO 20100215

2010-02-15 Thread Mike Nokel
Hi!
It's great! Nice artwork! Respect for including such applications as
hardware drivers, printing, languages by default. It now looks very
user-friendly.
However, there are some minor problems:
1) a lot of errors when changing screensavers. It can be solved by creating
directory /usr/share/backgrounds by default.
2) as was discussed earlier when clicking Desktop Session Settings the tab
Desktop should be opened, not Interface.
3) why have you choosen xfburn to include? I think that the most popular
area for installing LXDE (and of course Lubuntu) are netbooks and they just
don't have any CD/DVD-ROMs... In my opinion, it is unnecessary.

I have tested on my netbook HP 1233 - everything is working perfectly, and
using by default 110 Mb out of 1Gb is impressive (with Ubuntu 9.10 mini.iso
+ LXDE it uses after startup nearly 155 Mb). However, if there is xsplash I
haven't seen it, may be because of my videocard (Via Chrome9), I don't know.

I have also tried to run livecd on my notebook Asus M51TR. However, all that
I have seen was Lubuntu logo for approximately 1 minute after what there
came a kernel panic. I'll try to find solution but exactly now I don't know
why it is happening so.

In conclusion, I would like to say that it looks perfect and amazing. Thank
you!

Regards,
Michael.
