PC's

back to a realm of usefulness.

However, I did have a suggestions regarding the LXDE Clock settings. On a
default install %R is what the clock is set at, many PC users are more
used to the standard time that is used in Windows, on phones, watches
and other devices. Currently military time is the standard. I would like
to propose a change to how time is displayed on the taskbar. I think
%l:%M %p is another format that more people are used to. Which looks
like (7:37 PM ) when it is displayed. To find out how to do this I had
to look it up, which is fine
because I am a bit more technical. Another idea if changing the time
perhaps a dropdown box could be used here to allow users to change the
style of the time display. It would be much more intuitive for new
users, I consider this another of the small papercuts that this Ubuntu
derivative has.

I have to admit the clock is a bit of a faff to alter and really could be
better. Personally I think the unambiguous 24 hour clock is the best
default setting and hate having to change phones, etc. to use it. A
drop-down menu with a couple of preset options would make life easier.

Thanks for your time, I really do appreciate the effort you guys put in
and will try to chime in from time to time if I have any thoughts on
discussions in the mailing list.

Thank you, it's ideas like this that go to make Lubuntu better, as it's
these 'little' things that tend to annoy people the most. Feel free to
chime in as often as you wish. We also have an IRC channel at #lubuntu on

Hi there. Could I ask if you would consider switching the Adobe Flash
videos to be in the Ogg Theora format and use video tag? I looked at
http://lubuntu.net/ but all the videos wouldn't play from Firefox on
Ubuntu.

Not sure how much work this would entail.
Unfortunately my line kept dropping and I didn't get to talk about them
not

playing in FF.

The newer ones should run fine in Chromium with
chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra

installed. The older ones are unfortunately only avaiable as flv files.
The new videos from 2011 will be encoded in webm (which should be
playable in

every browser [FF 4.0 is needed]) + h264 (m4v as blip.tv now converts
automatically to it). As for the video tag. As far as I know chromium is
loading and caching those videos when you add them with the video tag.
That
would produce high traffic on the server. (blip.tv in that case) So a
link to
the file would be better I think. Clicking the link should then open up
the

video in the internal browser video player.

Thanks for the info Leszek. I just download and play the in Lifrea or
Opera and haven't had any problems. I don't know what the problem in FF
is (codec missing?) as they work for.

Once again thank you for making these screen-casts, as they are very
useful.

Happy New Year to you.:)

Hi Keith

First off, congratulations on your first full release! Very nicely done

Now on to more of a problem. My system (Compaq R4000, AMD 64 3500+/1 GB
RAM/Broacom 4318 wireless/ATI Xpress 200m video) goes into suspend just
fine. The problem is resuming.

Sometimes all goes well and it powers back up and re-connects to my
wireless connection with no issues at all.

Other times it powers up fine, reconnects but I cannot see my cursor. I
can still move my invisible cursor around and do things.

Other times, it resumes to the screen saver. Sits for a few seconds and
then powers down with the power light flashing. I hit the power button
and it resumes just fine (sometimes the cursor is invisible though).

I'm not sure how to report this bug in launchpad. It seems to want to
alway attach a package to the problem and I'm not sure what package this
should go to!

Thanks.

Have a read through the following

I recieved this on the osmo mailing list

gtkhtml2 has been abandoned upstream a few years ago and will be
removed from the debian archives within the next few weeks (probably
other distros will follow soon).

see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=580017

I was told:

... the packages have to be migrated to another HTML
rendering engine. There is gtkhtml3 of course, and now there is
webkit, which is superior in terms of features and not too far from
libgtkhtml2 in terms of API.

I suggest that you migrate osmo as soon as possible to use webkit for
rendering. For most packages, which use libgtkhtml2 in a simple way,
porting should be trivial.

Do you have any plans to migrate to webkit? Preparations for the next
debian release will start in the beginning of June and it would be a
pity to have the contacts feature disabled completely because of this...

Not sure how it will effect Lubuntu as there has been no response, yet. I
wouldn’t like to loose osmo as I’ve found it to be rather useful, I’ve
added it to my Ubuntu install as well.

Perhaps 2 small technical points about this mailing list itself.

Could something be done so that all replies are directed back to this
mailing list rather than to the sender if the sender (inadvertently)
sends as 'cc' rather than 'to' ? (as what's being done in the ubuntu
and kubuntu mailing list)

I’m with Goh on the one, the Reply To should be the list, I forget to
check occasionally and have to resend a separate mail to the list. If we
do attract new users to the list it will cause a bit of confusion.

Also can this mailing list be 'ported' or 'mirrored' to the gmane
newsgroup too?

Lastly, but I think more importantly, the exposure and 'market recall',
no.even just knowing about 'Lubuntu' is low. Not many people have
heard of it, even the ubuntu users themselves and that's a shame.

I understand Lubuntu is not 'officially' part of ubuntu yet, (just a
part of launchpad?) and that's perhaps the reason we cannot be too
'overt' about this, but could you share with us the framework that
needs to be done to achieve this? Who knows, some of us here, besides
being good designers and techies are good in marketing and pr too? (but
I hope not in office politics and corporate shenaniganism :) )

Thanks, regards - Goh Lip

I don’t think Lubuntu is doing badly for publicity as it’s currently 37th

Hello all,

I've spotted what appears to be a bug in the installer that can be run
from the Live CD desktop environment if one chooses Try Lubuntu without
installing from the main menu. Or the problem could be in the desktop
environment itself. It is such a fringe case, though, that I am not sure
if it is worth pursuing. It is 100% reproducible on this hardware.

The system is one I have scraped together while I am stuck in Italy. I
plan to use it for testing, as I have a more powerful laptop at my
disposal. The system is a home built PC based on a 440BX motherboard,
and it has a French keyboard.

To produce the error:

1. Boot the Lubuntu Lucid Beta 3 Live CD
2. Accept the default language, English, from the boot menu
3. Press F3 and select France for the keymap
4. Choose the Try Lubuntu without installing from the primary boot menu
5. At the desktop, start the installer
6. On the keyboard selection screen of the installer (step 3) the
installer guesses France - Alternative

7. Press the radio button for Choose your own
8. Select France from the right-hand window list
9. Try typing text in the test field; the keyboard produces no output
10. Open leafpad or LXTerminal; still no output from the keyboard
11. Quit the installer and restart the system from the Logoff menu
item; the CD ejects, but the system does not restart.

Later steps in installation will require the keyboard, I assume, so at
this point installation has failed.

Note: if leafpad or LXTerminal is used prior to starting the installer,
then the problem does not occur. Text appears in these apps. Once the
installer is started, text appears in the test field of step 3,

Workaround:

1. Do not use F3 to choose a keymap; or
2. Open leafpad or another text-input app, type something, then start
the installer.

So, is this important enough for a formal bug report? Should I try the
Ubuntu Lucid Beta to see if the problem occurs there also?

Your comments appreciated,
David

There have been a couple of 'strange' language problems, involving French
English, noticed by Phillw and myself, on Beta 2. I would try it with
Ubuntu if you can, but I suspect it is the way the Lubuntu ISO is set up.
I have reported a bug where all the languages (139) are installed to the
hard drive. I think it is worth reporting anyway as anything that messes
up the install could mean one less user.

Hi list,
I found yet another issue with current PCManFM last night.
Names of some menu items are not self-explainatory enough.
It's not easy for beginners to figure out what the menu items do.
I just learned how to add tooltips for menu items and show them in
status bar.

If we can add proper tooltips for menu items, this can greatly improve
usability.
I know we're in string freeze, but is it acceptable to add even more
new strings to PCManFM at this time?
The number of strings that needed to be added is about 30 ~ 40.
This is quite important for usability.
Since currently PCManFM is still in beta and its quality didn't meet
the requirements of a stable release, we won't have a stable release
or release candidate very soon. So we still have time to finish all
the translation prior to final release.

Opinions from translators?
If you guys allow me to do so, I'll add them later and inform you on
the mailing list when I've done it.
Otherwise, I'll leave them in a git branch. But I'm a little bit worry
about git branch because it doesn't seem to work well with some
translation systems and there might be conflicts in the future.
If these new strings are not going to be added this time, I'll release
pcmanfm 0.9.5 in about two days.

Anyways, I want to know what you think. So translations please share
your ideas with me.
Thanks!

Hmmm, I’d prefer 0.9.5 out as soon as possible and the tool tips added to
the next version. This would gives us a reasonably bug free version for
Lubuntu.

As most peoples first glimpse of Lubuntu will be from the Live CD and/or a

Hello,
The good news is I just fixed the selection problem in detailed list
view induced by new bug in gtk+ 2.18+ with simple workarounds so now
it works.
The bad one is some changes of strings is required to fix bug #2979567.

Sorry for the inconvenience for all of the translators, but this is
required since moving files to trash bin on remote filesystem is not
supported by gvfs. When a user does this, the files will be deleted
directly rather than being moved to trash bin. So a prompt telling the
user their files will be deleted directly is definitely needed.

Without this fix, files on remote filesystems cannot be deleted if
trash bin support is turned on and this is a severe usability bug. So
I'm requesting a string change here.

Another issue raised by brother is the terms trash can and trash
bin. Those two terms are used interchangeably in libfm and pcmanfm.
However, only one of them should be used throughout the whole program
for better consistency. So I'm going to fix this, too. For native
English speakers, which term is more suitable?

Marty Jack, help from you is needed since you seem to be the only
native English speaker in our development team.

Thank you all and sorry for the inconvenience.

As was pointed out in another thread it just has to be consistent really,
trash can seems to be most commonly used in the USA. I’ll just translate
it to Rubbish Bin for en_GB, not sure what other English speaking nations
use though. Will it cause problems for other languages, does bin/can
translate as the same thing.

That's the point indeed. I guess this is just a mistake from the
developer

but when the original string changes this will cause your translation to
be marked as fuzzy and as such it will not be used when the strings are
presented. So if we decide to update it the translators have to revisit
all those strings or they will be in en_US. NOT very good, it's a trade
off - a more consistent en_US and maybe some translations have a mix up
too because their language uses that. For en_GB that's not true, not for
sv either (papperskorg) and I guess alot of us around uses the same. A
change in original is a consequence in the other end. That's all.

Ah, I’m new to this translation lark so didn’t realise the full extent of
the problem. You are correct it does need to be consistent.

 Dear PCMan,

first: thanks for your great work!

 second: the problem:
 On https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/SubTeams/TestingSubTeam/pcmanfm2Testing;
you said that you can't reproduce the problem with highlighting in detailed
 view.

Because for me it's very annoying too, I'd like to describe it in more detail:

 - using lubuntu with the most recent updates and with the desktop-ppa and
 proposed-updates enabled.

 - using pcmanfm 0.9.3 with detailed list view as default view for every folder

 - At first start and at the fist screen I can select each folder and each file
with one click. And with the right-click I could open, open with, cut, ...
 and so on.

 - But if I go into a folder I cannot select any file or subfolder. With a
double-click I can open it, but I cannot selcect it with a one-click. And so
with a right-click I have only new, past, select all, ... and so on, but not
 open, cut, ...

 - If I change the view to compact view, then I can select what I want and
after that, if I change back to detailed list view then I can select the
items in that folder too. But after going into another folder the problem is
there and I cannot select anything.

Please take a look and fix the problem.
The detailed list view is the default view for a lot of people.

 Thanks in advance!

 Best regards

 Marcus Daub

There does appear to be a problem with Detailed List View. I’m not sure
if this is the same thing as described above.
If you select Detailed List View then open a folder and right click on a
file you get the menu with New, Paste, Select All, etc. IF you then Left
click on it and then right click you get the correct context menu with
Open, Open With... , etc. If you then right click on a different type
of file you get the same context menu as previous.
E.g. If you left click then right click on a tar.gz file you get Open,
Xarchiver, Open With..., etc. If you then right click on a PDF file you
still get Open, Xarchiver, Open With... If you then left click and right
click on a PDF you get a context menu with Open, Document Viewer, Open
With..., etc. I.e then correct context menu. This only occurs in
Detailed List View.
Hope this makes sense and is the same problem Marcus described.

[Lubuntu-desktop] Scanning and printing graphics, how?

2010-03-16 Thread Steve

Unless I’m missing something there appears to be no scanning package
installed as standard and no easy way of printing photos.

Perhaps I didn’t word this quite right. I know how to do it I just
think it should be available firm the default install as it seems like a
short coming to me.

It would appear I wasn’t missing anything, this can’t be done from the
default install. Might it not be a good idea to include something on the
default install to do this.

sudo aptitude full-upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade do the same thing,

needed. They just do it slightly differently.

apt-get update and aptitude update are identical, they tell you what new
versions are available.

The safe-upgrade and upgrade options will never remove any packages at all.

and not bother with the sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
method ?

You have to do an update first to get the list of newer packages, either
with apt-get or aptitude.

sudo aptitude full-upgrade just happens to solve a problem that sudo
apt-get dist-upgrade doesn’t in this case.

Hey, it's only one command, I might even get to remember that one ;-)

aptitude does not have dist-upgrade. It has full-upgrade and

sudo aptitude dist-upgrade works on my machine, although I believe

full-upgrade is supposed to be used now.

The smb:// protocol works.

Can’t place any files on the desktop. Anything placed in the Desktop

Actually, it suprise me. I just load the alpha on a 128MB Vbox, it's
slow but you can launch application without problem. Is it the whole
desktop which crash or only the application ?

Me too. i ran the live cd on real hardware (not vm) wit oentium II and
128

MB RAM. i wasn't that fast, but it didn't crash when starting an
application.

This was with out any swap, it functions OK with a swap partition on the

XChat crashes and Chromium just slows to a a near standstill, taking 30-40
mins to load a page (bbc.co.uk).

As I said, with a swap partition everything is OK but slooow.

Hi,

I just created a new testing ISO. This is not an Alpha, but just a
snapshot of the current work to be able to test more the new features.
Like others Alpha, you should be aware that it's not considered stable,
see warnings for Lucid Alpha :

Pre-releases of Lucid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Changes seen the Alpha 2 :
* Main changes in the seed :
 - chromium for the browser
 - gnome-mplayer for the videos
 - network-manager for the network
* New artwork made by Rafael Laguna. It's not the final theme, but it's
quite complete, so we can test with a non standard artwork. And I like
it :)
* A new session (Lubuntu-Netbook), which launched lxlauncher. You need
to logout, select Lubuntu-Netbook session instead of Lubuntu, and enter
login ubuntu without password.

Known bugs:
* pcmanfm2 is not the default filemanager yet, it need more integration
to be usable. It is still available by using pcmanfm2
* If you test on a USB, the first screen will freeze for a moment when
you click on Try Lubuntu Just wait, it will continue as normal.
* Bug reported during testing :

Currently booting, will let you know in 3-4 hours whether a fresh install

That’s a similar rig to the one I’m using to test on. It’s more than

Have you tested sound yet, I had to install a driver as on mine.

If you run hardinfo it will tell you what CPU you have along with other
useful (and not so useful) information.

System Tools System Profiler and Benchmark

It might be interesting to compare the benchmarks from that program.

Hi,

this version looks very promising. Nm-applet is working fine. The
LXDesign Theme is really a very cool clearlooks theme. Very good work !
Chromium is running its first run wizard if clicked. Perhaps we should
ship a preconfigured version with bookmarks and set it as default
browser (its telling me that it isn't yet).
Hmm... acpi=off in the livecd boot parameters ? I guess a temporary fix
due to hal removal isn't it ?
The next thing I noticed. There is currently no visible
gnome-power-manager icon in the systray of the panel (as it is started
automatically but I don't see any icon but can click on it I guess it
is a panel problem). Next thing gpicview should it be in the panel menu
under graphics ? (somehow the graphics submenu seems strange containing
only 1 app)
My XFMultimedia Keys for Volume up/down mute is not working (eeePC
701). xfce4-volumed should fix this or setting the keys in the openbox
config and creating a script that does volume up/down and mute (if you
don't want to have the fency notify-osd)

The last thing that we might include (only a suggestion) is a tweaked
/etc/sysctl.conf for Netbooks:

# Delay real write to disk
vm.dirty_writeback_centisecs=1500

is crucial for this. Making the system visually faster.

Here a suggestion (also for all testers) set the panel size to 24 and
the icon size to 22. This way the panel here (on eeePC 701) looks much
better.

Overall well made promising future with pcmanfm2 I hope ;)

I wonder, isn't lubuntu's target mainly old hardware, as netbooks have
it's UNR? or if we want it to be so netbook, maybe a the UNR opengl
menu (which I love by the way) could be somehow attached do
LXDE/openbox, instead of gnome/metacity? of course only as something
to launch deliberately on purpose (maybe an icon suggesting to try it
could be placed on desktop),not by default? I mean: defaultly lubuntu
would be a regular lightweight desktop, but it could be turned into
UNR-like system based on LXDE easily?

I think that would just add extra clutter on the CD, meaning a longer
download time on a slow connection. I think packages, etc. should be kept
to the absolute minimum required to provide a functional system.

Let's do it on Sunday 21.

But as feature freeze is on February 18th, I would like to have a first
list of applications by default before. So, I'll publish something on
sunday (with maybe a testing iso with them), and we will have 1 week +
the IRC meeting to test/discuss it.

Could the topic at #lubuntu be changed to reflect this, it still has a
meeting on from last year.

Hi.
in my opinion solid colour panels look really, really awful. but I
agree that maybe on mobile devices too dark colours may be bad, but
again - bright are bad for old CRT screens, especially with

windows grayness, but aesthetically shaded, instead of that ugly
solidness? but still I think it's more of an art-design, that
technical matter.
and about multi-panel idea - I always make lower panel just launcher
for stuff, so it may be auto-hiding and big (for easier tracking of
icons on netbooks), sth like a very simple dock-launcher?

I always auto-hide the panel anyway so I’m not really bother about it’s
looks as such.
Setting it to Solid colour (with Opacity) impressed a couple of people
though.

for me a solid colour associates with ascetic ultra-simple
primitivness. especially when it's gray. but well, that's a matter of
taste. I just love eyecandies, and I belive most people do - the
question is, where is the limit of a good taste.

;)

I don’t know where the limit is but, I rather liked the pink wallpaper in
the karmic version :)

[Lubuntu-desktop] Hidden Panel and Maximised Window

2010-02-01 Thread Steve

I’ve set my panel to automatically hide. When I have a maximised window
and unhide the panel the window bobs down (I have the panel at the top).
I would expect the panel to go over the title bar. Is this supposed to
happen. It doesn’t do it if a normal window is right at the top, the
title bar is covered by the panel.
