I'd suggest that you do some investigate to see what's the cause of performance problems of software center first, and to see if avoiding them is possible. If it's not possible to avoid the performance problems, then go for a simplified synaptic. This could save you quite a lot of time for try and

i think that sometimes rewrite is better than cleanup the code, and i dont' know if the authors of USC will be available. anyway, we are in democracy XD and this is the spirit of the open-source, i'm available to write python apps. P.S. i'm very sorry for my bad english, but i'm italian :-P On

Writing and mantaining own application of this importance can be tedious and risky task. Maybe we should first just assess what components of Ubuntu SW center make it slow and RAM consuming.
