Thanks Christos for this, I like to see remixes, spins etc. as they are a good
source of ideas, either good or bad. Although it’s intended for low resource
machines Lubuntu does make a good staring point for the more adventurous.

It should be possible, but it needs some work, and someone needs to code
it :)

I need to fix it in Natty (11.04) before backporting the fix to Maverick
(10.10).
Upstream mean, it's fixed in the project which maintain the program.
Example, GNOME is upstream, you need to wait some time before seeing the
changes from GNOME to Ubuntu.

You can't list all problems on the releases notes. The good place for
this is the bugtracker (launchpad). It should be the first source of
information about bugs, not the wiki.
If you want to add documentation and workaround, feel free to talk to
Phillw, to had them to the Documentation section.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 10.10 RMX

2010-11-09 Thread Tim Bernhard
Not to sound dumb, but what do you mean it's fixed in Natty or fixed in
upstream? How do us 10.10 users get the fixes?

As far as I know, only the OS Prober issue has been added to the release
notes. When I installed Lubuntu, I had to do some digging to find the
solution. I don't mind because I like to learn and I like Linux, but not
good for the average user.

The release notes did mention that the USB installer was buggy, but no
mention of a possible workaround. (My USB - made without persistent storage
- has worked great. I've used it several times, but only on my computer so
I don't know if it will work for others. Still, I think it's worth noting
in the release notes because it did work for me.

I don't think the Chromium problem is mentioned in the release notes. I've
posted the workaround that I found in the mailing list as well
as several other places.

If indeed these things are there and I just didn't fully understand what I
was reading, please accept my apologies. Like I said, I just a use who
what's to help, not an expert. I'll also add that I'm using Lubuntu as my
main OS. I'm 100% behind you guys.

BTW, Have I mentioned that I get a full 1-1/2 hours of increased battery
life on my laptop with Lubuntu? I'M LOVING IT!

difficult could be to implement a script like that to lxappareance? a label

It could be a great great thing to do for lubuntu!!

Other thing: when Lubuntu is freshly installed, Chromium has its own theme

Well, this one is a special one, because ubiquity shipped in Lubuntu
have modifications not included in official repository. This sort of bug
should be reported under lubuntu-desktop, until we are sure it's really

There is 2 bugs : 1 bug in lubuntu-default-settings (fixed in Natty),

I disagree on you there. His goal was to make a working lubuntu system

share it with the mailing list. (That's my opinion on it).
And I don't see why the artwork should be simple/basic. I mean some
simple things will improve the appearance of lubuntu hugely, in my opinion.
I might be wrong about this, but I think whether you have a bad computer
or a really good one, (almost) everyone likes eyecandy. But again, this
is just my humble opinion and based on no research whatsoever.

The Artwork needs to be strict and clear and give the user the impression of a
corporate identity. So that even without seeing the Lubuntu logo you will
guess from the colors used and how they are mixed up together: "Oh that must
be lubuntu".
The strict direction or dogma Lubuntu follows here is "Be simple" (don't know
if its only inoffical or somewhere offically written down) . That is good and
should not be changed drastically. (Changing a brand or corporate identiy to
drastically does not work, some folks here in germany [perhaps also in europe]
might know the disaster with Raider becoming Twix in the 90s)
There are some good websites like box-look.org and gnome-look.org aswell as
kde-look.org to get good wallpaper, icon sets and even openbox themes.
One interesting idea I had was perhaps creating a special lubuntu-themes-extra
package which could contain some community created themes. This package may
then be make public on the lubunt ppa and later perhaps also become a part of
the official ubuntu repository. If there is enough space on the disk we could
also ship it default installed.
But don't get me wrong on this. The basic theme we ship now is good enough. We
should focus more on polishing the desktop experience for the user.
Fixing bugs and perhaps adding some interesting features.
Experimenting with Remixes can be a help to improve your/our own knowledge and
can give as some hind on how to improve some things. But with that said, I
don't think everyone now should start its own remix :P

I think you convinced me. But I think the idea of making some extra
themes available is a good idea, as there is not much choice now.
And as Julien already said, it's just a matter of taste, it's a good
thing to have the brand look simple, but others might want more from
this and others want more from that, so it would be cool to have some
package :)

Artwork is a question of taste. You can't discuss on this, except on
technicals details.

Personally, I prefer the Lubuntu one. That doesn't mean it's better than

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] Lubuntu 10.10 RMX

2010-11-09 Thread Tim Bernhard
I agree that (most) everyone likes eye candy. Lubuntu it should be as
light, fast and good looking as possible. *But more importantly they OS
should plain work.* There are a few items that don't work right now and I
think those things should be address.

I recently tried Lubuntu, Peppermint Ice and Peppermint One. I found that
Peppermint is a little further ahead of Lubuntu. The installer works on a
USB stick, you can actually open your downloads from Chrome and seems
slightly more polished. I don't think I had to apply one workaround on
either of my Peppermint installs. Peppermint also boots a little faster
which is nice when you have a lightweight laptop. Lubuntu isn't too bad in
that area, but not quit as fast. Where Lubuntu is killing both Peppermint
installs and my tweaked UNR 9.10 in the area of power consumption! I've
never been able to get more than ~4.5 hours of battery life from the 6 hour
battery in my Acer AS1410. With Lubuntu I'm seeing 6+ hours! That's why
I'm using it and that's why I will stick with it.

Tim

Ok, it seems that your goal is a Lubuntu Remix. Nice job and nice
customization. But I have to disappoint you. The Lubuntu artwork is not
intended or designed to be cool, just practical and simple, as
possible. Despite my words, I'm not offended, but there's a difference
between using OUR artwork and using the Orta GTK and many other
elements, that you must consider on mentioning GPL (or whatever)
licenses.

Anyway, you can always vote on the next artwork poll...

I disagree on you there. His goal was to make a working lubuntu system
for his laptop, and it worked out well for him, so he was kind enough
to share it with the mailing list. (That's my opinion on it).
And I don't see why the artwork should be simple/basic. I mean some
simple things will improve the appearance of lubuntu hugely, in my
opinion.
I might be wrong about this, but I think whether you have a bad
computer or a really good one, (almost) everyone likes eyecandy. But
again, this is just my humble opinion and based on no research
whatsoever.

Wow, that looks really good! Great job!
One of the things which scared me off a bit from Lubuntu was the looking.
It might be me, but this version of Lubuntu looks far better than the
original theme... (in my humble opinion)
As I've said more often in the #lubuntu channel, eye candy doesn't
necessarily need to be resource hungry.

I found this screnshots already more inviting than the live cd I've used.

This is not me trying to be negative, just trying to make lubuntu
better, so I would love to hear your opinions in this case!

Oh and for the others on the list now knowing who I am, I'm Timothé
Beemster, from The Netherlands.
I'm 17 years old, I like playing football, singing, computing
(especially linux and webdev) and in the linux field I help out at the
GMPC (Gnome Music Player Client) project, submitting bugs for Linux Mint
and helping out in #ubuntu-beginners and #lubuntu!

My mentor is Phillw. who everyone here without a doubt knows :)

I would already thank the whole lubuntu team for the great effort put in
the project, it's a really, really promising distro!

Regards,

Timothé

Well, nice to see you've created something, but I really can't see the
point of this release.
It would make a little more sense if you could tell us what you've done
to it and what you have added, maybe a feature list?
