I tried it out, it works for me. I tested it with Clementine, which
app are you having problems with?

I think VLC uses qt4, so qtconfig-qt4 should be the right way to
change stuff.
Try deleting the file ~/.config/Trolltech.conf (make a backup first)
and then check.
You may also want to try out some other application like Clementine to
see if they all are being affected.
